Info on 1977 topps mexican fb needed

Was just wondering if anyone had any idea on what PSA looks for when grading 77 mexican football. I thought long ago I had read that PSA will allow wax stains on the back of this issue without giving it a qualifier, but I could be wrong. Any truth to this?? Talk about a tough issue to get graded! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

I have had several with wax on the back you couldn't see with the naked eye come back with a qualifiier. I have no idea what they look for. I have sent in perfectly center cards fresh from a 4 card pack with no stains come back as 5,6 and 7. I think it varies by graded there. I am not just saying that. I really think that there are only a few graders that do Mexicans and their opinions vary greatly. Until about 5 months ago there wer only 15-20 9's. Now there are over 100. I think they reeducated the graders on what to look for on the Mexicans. But what they look for, I am not sure. Even the 9's have the tabs hanging off the sides and corners that look perforated.

Love the set, but PSA may finally be getting it right, but until recently they had no idea how to grade these.

  • From my experience, if the wax stain is not too bad where it doesn't darken the cardboard, they might let it go. However, I definitely had cards that were wax rather than gum stained get st qualifiers.

Good luck with your grades Mike, especially if you're looking for PSA 9 or 10 Paytons!
