1970's Football sets going up?

Seems like the sets on Ebay have been going up in price. Anyone else noticed this trend, even the late 70's are getting close or over book now. Yes, I know book is not a good indicator of anything.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

    king,
I agree with you. 1975's have really taken off. We all like to go where the prices are still low for buyers. For pre-1980's it is getting tough even in baseketball and hockey.

My last few auctions for raw vintage football singles have done very well. I think the 1970's sets are going to keep going up because of the Steelers Super Bowl run.

SMR NEEDS TO INCREASE THE VALUE FOR ALL OF THE KEY 1970'S STEELERS ROOKIES!

  • Right at the height of the 50's and 60's baseball rush, someone asked me where I thought the next sportscard rush would be and I said late 60's and early 70's football.

Looks like I may have been correct.

The mid-late 1960's thru the 1970's is when the NFL started its explosion to the top. All of the stars from that period will be in heavy demand as the NFL starts promoting their history. I see that the ads are starting to feature the stars from that era. I think Lynn Swann's political campaign will add to the demand.

If I were investing from that period, I would focus on Steeler and Cowboy rookies. If you want real value buys, I would look at the defensive players from that era. It seems that experienced collectors are buying high grade defensive rookies.

Besides Bradshaw, Swann, Harris, Lambert and Webster, who are the other key Steeler rookies in the 70's? I grew up in the 80's and know all the Bears, even the obscure ones from the 85 team, but I know little about the 70's Steelers other than Bradshaw, Swann and Harris were an offensive force and Webster was a stud on the line and Lambert was a mean SOB.

Who else should I key in on?

Right, another HOFer. That is a tough card too. But who are the guys that aren't HOFers that are key rookies? Or did all the guys worth a damn get into the HOF?

The top team from that period were the Steelers, Cowboys, and the Raiders. The Vikings and Dolphins are slightly below those teams in terms of national popularity, I don't think you can go wrong buying PSA 8/9 rookies of HOFs from those teams.

I'm not sure if 1980's football will have the same type of jump as the 1970's. The 1980's stars already had a lot of exposure and had a good run due to the Marino/Elway rookies. There might be some potential in th 1980 Phil Simms RC and 1981 Art Monk RC. I think both of those guys will eventually get into the Hall. I am surprised that a PSA 10 1982 LT doesn't book for around a grand. Who can ever forget the game tapes of LT?

I certainly hope they go up I have been accumulating 70's football for years now, I have most of the sets from the 70's complete and some of those sets graded. It's about time that the price caught up to the most popular sport in America.
