Inherited a bunch of FDCs but not sure what to do

Hi,

My Dad gave me a bunch of First Day Covers and told me to see what I could get on eBay for them. However, I'm not sure how collectable they are and whether I should sell them as a single lot, or separately. Most of them are from Hong Kong.

The collection I have includes the following kind of things:

1964 Macau
1982 Windemere Lake Festival
1985 Royal Mail Mint Stamps - 350 years of service to the public

1970 Tung Wah Hospital Centenary (Hong Kong)
1970 Asian Productivity Year (Hong Kong)
1972 Cross Harbour Tunnel (Hong Kong)
1973 Festival of Hong Kong
1974 Universal Postal Union 1874-1974
1975 Hong Kong Festivals
1979 Mass Transit Railway (Hong Kong)
1977 Tourism (Hong Kong)
1982 Hong Kong Fauna
1982 Port of Hong Kong Past and Present
1983 Hong Kong by Night

1972 Royal Silver Wedding (Hong Kong)
1973 The Wedding of HRH Princess Anne (Hong Kong)
1975 Royal Visit (Hong Kong)
1977 Silver Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II (Hong Kong)
1981 Royal Wedding (Charles & Diana)
1985 The Life and Times of HM Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hong Kong

1971 Year of the Boar (Hong Kong)
1971 Lunar New Year (Hong Kong)
1972 Lunar New Year (Hong Kong)
1973 Lunar New Year (Hong Kong)
1975 Lunar New Year (Hong Kong)
1977 Lunar New Year (Hong Kong)

1970 Osaka Expo '70 (Hong Kong)

Any comments/advice would be great.

Thanks!
David

    Hello David,

Welcome to the Stamp Forum. image There's always someone who collects something; its just finding those people thats the problem. FDC can get very specialized as to the artist/printer if cachets.

In my experience, modern FDCs don't have much value. I just had a set of 39 FDCs in a Fleetwood album that sold for $15.50 on eBay. I was glad to get that much. I would recommend selling in groups so you won't be ate up in fees. Many dealers sell covers at $0.25-$1.00/ea and if buying lots, even cheaper.

Good luck. Probably not the news you were hoping for, but it should give you a realistic expectation when you do try to sell.

    Doug
