Does anyone know why Jim Taylor auto'd cards are tough to find?

There only seems to be one certified auto (2004 Fleer GOTG).

  • Greg, some players just don't sign. Swann was like that for awhile. Very tough autograph and no certified cards till only recently (I believe 2003 SP Authentic??). BTW, got my cards from Jack this weekend. When do you need them for the PSA/DNA submission?

I'm havinga tough time trying to find auto'd cards of quite a few Packers HOFers including Taylor, Willie Davis and Willie Wood.

I'm glad you received the cards from Jack - are you happy w/ what he sent you? I'm meeting him tomorrow to pick up another dozen cards. I plan on mailing the order on or before Feb 28th. I'd like everything a week before to give me time to put the order together.

    Greg,

I suggest that you look into going to the Lombardi Golf Classic, which is usually around August (I think). Many if not all of his old players show up for this thing. I havent gone myself. I am not sure why but just never made it out there. Plus there are always other Packers there as well. It is usually in the Milwaukee area so you dont have to go all the way up to Green Bay. Lets look into it and maybe we can road trip up there this year.

  • The cards were what I expected condition wise. I purchased mostly autographs of deceased HOF'ers, so getting the sig. is more important than the condition. I still haven't found my 97 Legends cards yet, but I'm narrowing down where they might beimage
If I can't find them, I have at least 20 cards to send you. With them I should have about 50.

Taylor does just have the one certified issue, but its one more than Gregg, St. Clair, Davis, Stautner, Willis, and Willie Wood.
Riggins was once considered tough but has signed for a few issues now.

I sent a TTM request through the Football Hall of Fame to Willie Wood about 4 years ago and the card came back pretty quick.
    Leroy Kelly wanted 5 dollars.

    Good Luck

By the way, are you sure PSA grades the touchdown?
This is on ebay now, but I don't think you can add unlicensed "Trade cards" to your sets.

It's funny because I thought about sending TTM requests for Gregg, Wood, St. Clair, Wood and a few others that are tough. All of them are available through the Swell releases - so I don't worry about finding them too much. I'm having a tough time finding Jim Finks, Len Ford, Hank Jordan, Turk Edwards, to name a few. I'm in the process of making a large purchase of 1975 IR and 1977 Touchdown.

Just so you know, I talked w/ Gayle Kean of PSA last week and she said that for cards that are identified as "Trade Card", you would have to resubmit the card to PSA for grading. The Halas card was submitted under the PSA/DNA service since the card is listed as a "trade card". As such, it can't currently be added because it's not identified as a card in PSA's system. This is the reason why you would need to have the card graded - which Gayle confirmed is possible for the 1975 IR and 1977 Touchdown sets.

    Greg M.

FYI - I sent you a PM a while back. I wanted to confirm that you hold the #1 HOF auto set.

Yeah I'm #1 by default (I was the only active collector until recently).
I am trying to put together a Type set from 1955-1990 so my GPA will not improve and progress is slow.

Since when are Touchdown considered trade cards by PSA? They've graded some unsigned ones, and they're in the pop report. It's a legit set, in all the annual guides. I had 4 graded at... I think the 2004 National.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Over the years I've had good luck getting Taylor to sign through the mail. I've always mailed requests to his business. It's been a few years, but he had a real estate business in Baton Rouge.

I agree w/ you on no stickers - but I will buy them as placeholders until I can get an autographed card. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by "Type" set? Also, why 1955 through 1990? Are you going to collect the entire HOF auto set or only HOFers that were inducted in that time frame. Just curious.

    Joe,

This question has generated a LOT of confusion - but I talked w/ BJ and her explanation is as follows. If you submit an auto'd trading card to PSA/DNA for authentication, they will only grade the card and not research the type of card it is. That's why it is listed as a trade card. If you submit an auto'd trading card to PSA for authentication and encapsulation and ask for the card to be graded, they will research the type of card and grade the card and authenticate the sig.

Based on BJ's comments, PSA and PSA/DNA are two distince services and you can only have a card graded through the PSA $20 service (graded/authenticated). Make sense now? It's very confusing...

Thanks for the advice. I'll try TTM. I've never sent a TTM - how do you suggest I do so? Do I sent a prepaid envelope inside my envelope? Do I send $5/$10 with the request? Any advice would be appreciated.

Up until I read this I was still confused. I guess it now makes sense. Is this the service that we will be using on our group submission?

  • Thought I'd chime in here. I had the same question regarding ullr's type-set and I believe what he means is that he is attempting to get a different (company, year, etc.) type of autographed card for each player. In other words, only one 1981 Topps, only one 1963 Fleer, one 2001 Legendary Cuts, etc. for his set. I believe this is correct. Very cool concept but I don't think I'd have the patience! I like grabbing any autographs when I can and that's why I'll have about 20 '88 and '89 Swell cards in my set but I enjoy the hunt as well as minimizing my costs for autos.

I'll have about 15-20 cards to send you for the PSA/DNA submission this time. Looks we should have the 100 card minimum with no problem.

Are you also still planning on sending a group in for the $5 registry special?

    Frank,

We'll submit under the regular PSA service. The PSA/DNA service has a different submission form - I've seen them at the Chicago shows but have never submitted anything under this service.

    Wufdude,

Ullr's quest is quite ambitious - that would be incredibly difficult to say the least. I'm with you - I will buy any auto'd card that I can with a nice signature and if the card is in EX/MT condition or better.

As for the PSA submission, send me the excel files when you get a chance. I still plan on submitting a $5 registry special order in addtion to our PSA auto'd card order (maybe I should stop calling it a PSA/DNA submission image Jay is sending his cards this week. I'm still going back and forth on what I want to submit. I want to keep my order under $1,000 - but it keeps growing every day!!! I'll have to pull a few and submit them later. As I said before, we can submit another order in a few months.
