  • The chase and the record keeping. I also love the anticipation of mail coming. The cards themselves seem to be secondary.

    Great question!

I'm a pack rat so collecting is a natural urge - sorta like an itch you just can't seem to scratch.

First it enhances my appreciation and enjoyment of sports - especially baseball.

Second, the study involved with collecting puts an historical perspective on sports that I wouldn't have if I were not collecting. I also enjoy studying the hobby as such - not only all the trivia involved but also how it affects people.

Third, I live for the hunt - the next cool item I didn't know existed.

Forth, the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a set e.g. All the time and work is well worth it.

Fifth, the ability to share what I have learned with people - like here at CU. Most people in the hobby will admit that the joy in sharing is tops on their list.

I have found that people who have hobbies seem to be much happier people and live longer!!!

I guess I am not one of those trying to seek out that "find" somewhere. I guess until I came to these boards I did not have any focus on collecting, but now I would say it is. Though I have changed directions a few times, it is better than in the past. I do enjoy hearing and seeing what everyone is collection and their recent purchases. I enjoy seeing things that I know that I cannot personaly afford and seeing that someone on here was able to obtain it.

I have become way more focused in the last 5-10 yrs. And, I too, am much more directed since coming to CU.

Some of the stuff I collect would be considered junk to others.

  • I love the hunt, but its meeting all the other great people in this hobby that has really made this hobby fun.

  • I'm a history buff. I Love learning about events that happened in the past. That's why I began collecting WW2 War cards. Very educational plus the thrill of the hunt is great.

  • It's funny, some people think we're completely crazy to spend money on sportscards. What benefit could there be?

I've gotten alot of out it:

-As a kid I liked sports, math and business. Cards were just a perfect combination of those three.

-Introduction to business. I learned about niches, different business models, auctions, IPO like speculation, etc.

-I like the variety. The thrill of the hunt. Seeing something you've never seen before. Something for every budget.

-I like what they represent. Americana. Optimism.

    -Great memories and great people.

-And you can make some money or at least break even on them.

I think that TheCARDKid put it best in terms of my thoughts on collecting.

Heck, I even had my own glass display case (like the ones that you'd just stare into and check out all of the cards on all three levels) in my garage and the neighborhood kids would 'shop' at my 'store'. image
