Heisman autograph'd cards Official thread

With the current interest in the HOF auto football thread, I figured that I would start this thread. It has been discussed in the HOF auto thread and I have requested that it be added to the registry. If others can request it so that it makes it's way up the set request list, that would be great.

  • That would be cool. Do you have a list of the winners that you could cut and paste into the thread? Do you know how many have certified auto cards?

Here is the list of Heismans with their RCs as in that registry. I am not sure how many of these players have certified autos, but I would say a good portion since most are from the modern card era, alhtough the earlier Heisman winners will be tough.

Are they going to allow any signed card to be included or are they defined cards? I asked about a Favre TD reciever auto set, but they said that there would have to be defined cards. They dont want many more sets like the HOF autos. They said that my set was better suited for the collectors showcase.

    Greg,

I was told that this set could not be compiled like the HOF auto sets. I believe BJ advised me quite some time ago that I would have to pick one card for each player to be allowed in the set. That would make this a not so fun set to put together if that was the case and I think there would be little to no interest. But, if any auto'd card of a Heisman winner was allowed, that would be great.

When she told me that, I told her to disregard. Maybe with your relationship with PSA, you may be able to discuss a set very similar to the HOF auto set. I do not see the big deal with having a set like that, other than having to give cert numbers to everything, but they do that with the HOF auto set. Anyway, I lost interest in doing this as a registry set, but would be interested if you are able to make it a go with them.

I would not spend the money to get them authenticated and graded for a "Collector's Showcase" set.

  • I've read that the Nile Kinnick autograph is almost impossible. And when one does show up it commands hundreds if not thousands? Is this true?

Kinnick (1939 Heisman winner) is impossible because he died at the age of 24, on 2 June 1943 in a training accident in the Carribean (he was in the Navy Air Corp). To be honest, I don't know if he had a card made of him while he was alive....you're probably only going to find programs, 8x10 photos, 3x5 cards, ect...

    Jay,

Based on what BJ said, it will be easier on them by the end of the year w/ the registry upgrade. Supposedly the upgrade will eliminate them having to add cert #'s to defined sets - which is a huge burden on them now. After the upgrade, they will have more time and can support a set like the Heisman auto card set. If you really want the set added, maybe try again in 12 months...they'll probably be more receptive.

Did they say when the upgrade is going to happen? I have sets I want to add but I will wait until it is better timing. Or should I get them in now to get ahead of the game?

    greg,

thanks for the update. i was hoping from the email that i got a few months ago from the ladies that once the new software was runnging they might be able to do one of these sets again.

Looks like Playoff & Donruss really hooked you up on this one. I was actually contemplating putting this set together just for my own interest because DLP had done such a nice job of getting autographs of a lot of these guys on modern cards.

The auto sets have to wait for me though...once my other sets are done, or near completion I'll consider tasking myself with a set like this. It definitely would be fun and interesting.

Good luck with the sets. Maybe in a year or so I can start chasing you guys. image

I just received an update from Gayle and this set should be added by the end of the year. I'm sitting right now at 84.51% complete and need 11 of the 71 Heisman winners. The list of auto's I need are:

    Clint Frank
    Davey O'Brien
Nile Kinnick (nearly impossible - the first Heisman winner to die)
    Tom Harmon
    Bruce Smith (very tough)
    Frank Sinkwich
    Les Horvath
    Glenn "Army" Davis
    Alan Ameche
    Pete Dawkins
    Ernie Davis (very tough)

Let me know if you can help w/ my quest.

Yes - very true. He won the Heisman in 1939 and died in a Military training accident (he was a pilot) in 1943...very, very tough. Ernie Davis is nearly impossible also because he died of Lukemia when he was very young (22 or 23 I think). Besides them, Bruce Smith is tough even though he lived 27 years after he won the Heisman...I'm not sure if he was a recluse or what the story is.

Another great set is the 2006 and 2007 Press Pass Legends..there are a LOT of Heisman auto'd cards in those sets which are very reasonable.

    Greg,

I like the set. I collect Heisman autos, but I try to get as many in person as I can. I do have a few cards I thought I would share with you.

I picked this up at a mall show 10 years ago for about 10 bucks:

That is a great auto...I absolutely love the Press Pass Legends cards...what a great concept!

    I just picked up a Glenn Davis auto'd 1992 Heisman card...which leaves 10 more that I need:

    Clint Frank
    Davey O'Brien
    Nile Kinnick
    Tom Harmon
    Bruce Smith
    Frank Sinkwich
    Les Horvath
    Alan Ameche

A further update. I now only need the following autographed cards to complete the set:

    Clint Frank

    Reese,

Vessels is middle of the road...not easy but not overly tough. If the card is way OC then you can probably find something else relatively easily. I thought that KHW has several slabbed auto's for sale.

I'd say $50 on the low end and $100 on the high end. I just check out the auto in question - it looks a little weak to be honest...plus check out the seller's rating....95.7!!!

The Heisman auto set is finally live! I've updated and the only slabbed card that I'm not able to add is Frank Sinkwich. I still have 8 more to have grade which will leave me with 6 to finish the set. The six I need are:

    Clint Frank
    Nile Kinnick
    Davey O'Brien
    Tom Harmon
    Ernie Davis
    Bruce Smith

Of the 6, 5 are possible to have autographed on gum cards with the lone exception of Nile Kinnick. Please let me know if you can help.

There are a 2 58 Ameche's on E-Bay right now... FYI - I don't think that Clint Frank ever had a card made of him while he was alive (neither did Kinnick).

Thanks for the list of guys that sign free.

I know I can find Ameche, Kelley, Davis, and Janowicz pretty easily, they are just expensive. I was kind of hoping with "The Express" movie coming out recently, that a few Ernie Davis signatures might show up. Unfortunately, I've only seen one (a signed program) since the movie came out.

    Reese,

Kelley, Davis and Janowicz are all relatively affordable. Davis is around $20 to $40, and Kelly and Janowicz are in the $60 to $80 range. Ameche is the most expensive of the bunch and typically runs in the $150 to $225 range. I bought a beautiful Ameche from Ron Gordon for $150 image

KHW had a ton of the 1991 to 1993 Heisman cards for sale recently - I bought several from him.

BTW, I know a guy who bought a Ernie Davis signed 1961 Nu Scoop from CJ earlier this year for c. $1k. I wonder what the chances are of that card being real...lol.

KHW has still has a bunch of them. One of these days, I'll be buying a bunch from him!

$1000 for a legit Ernie Davis would be a steal. The last index card I saw sold for $1500 and that was over a year ago.

I'm glad I bought my 55 Sinkwich when I did. Check out this price!!!

    Reese,

Agreed on the Davis - a signed 61 Nu Scoops or 1962 Topps would run in the $1500 to $2500 range...easily. $350 on the Sinkwich...holy cr*p!! I bought mine for $150 in a BIN auction. The auto is very nice.
