'52 Mantle - real?

Probably one of the worst examples I've ever seen if it is real. What do you experts say?

The tape and the writing enhances this photograph so much. image

For the '52 Mantles, if you are trying to sell this card, does eBay automatically prompt you to make sure this card is either an original or reprint? It just seems that all of these scammers mention this 'reprint' thing in their description. They're almost like, 'well I have to state reprint, even though I know it's an original Mantle'...

One thing that was brought up in OBC circles, which should have been immediately obvious to me, was that the tape on the card looks way too new. Tape that old should be way yellow. Also the fact that the card doesn't even need the tape in the first place.
  • You mean someone doesnt have anything else they want for the $15 or whatever it finishes at? Even if it is a conversation piece, there isn't a better conversation piece??

Even if it was real, which it isn't, I wouldn't even want it or pay anything for it anyway looking like that.

    Ya know...

They say this but I think it's a smoke screen to "trap" people and is in violation of the "authenticity" clause and if reported, they may make him edit or shut it down.

You have to make an attempt to authenticate the item or just plain come and and say - this is a reprint - and then if the reprint is not authorized, you can then report it as a forgery/counterfeit IMO.

Either way, these guys are just plain tiresome!

so many problems ... where to start...

    1) 0 rating
    2) stolen pic
    3) acts naive, but yet mentions grading
    4) "lowers" reserve to 3K, but has a NR auction

    what a mess...
  • yet another one...this guy doesn't mention that he just bought the card (part of a bunch of cards) where the seller says..

<< <i>I am going to provide two cards you can also show your friends. I included some kind of reprints of 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and 1954 Bowman Ted Williams. I received my first negative ever because of these two cards (retaleation of the seller). I paid over a thousand dollars for them. No, they are not real and I don’t want you to think that they are. I am throwing these two cards in just for fun. My finance wanted me to keep them to show others, however I am tired of looking at the fakes I paid way to much for. I will mention all other cards throughout this lot are authentic. >>

Look at his other auction for the mustard glove. If the guy eats a hotdog with his work gloves on you ou are working with.can imagine what kind of genius you are working with.
  • here is ying yangs reply when I asked why he was selling a fake Mantle..

thats the auction, i took it to 2 high end collectors and i showed them the auction also and they compaired it to the mantle rookie they have and they said i should get it graded

The card is heavily taped with all four corners being cut.

Jeese almost wants you to think the guy is being honest.

and then we haqve this gem:

Follow-up by jelophine: SINCE WHEN DO BUYERS HAVE TO ASK IF THEY ARE BEING SCAMMED FIRST?

Im not sure who is more stupid here the seller or the buyer who thinks that she is going to get an 18k GOLD necklace and matching bracelot for 20.00 with GOLD AT 550.00!!

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I emailed the guy asking why he is selling the Ted Williams without telling ppl it's a fake. His reply:

"i did win it true but do you always take some ones elses word if somthing is fake? or do you find out for yourself! a smart person would find out as i did. im not trying to sound rude but always findout for your self "

    What an idiot.

  • You folks need to report these scams to have eBay remove the listings. Simply cut n paste the item number into the Authenticity Disclaimer report. The Smack Zone gets many fakes removed this way.

Perhaps this should be a stand-alone thread and bumped as more fakes are discovered.
  • thanks for the link....was looking for a link to report it...but eBay is so great about "hiding" what you need to know...I will bookmark that ...thanks

I have a shortcut on my screen.

It only takes a second to report.

  • reported both of his auctions and the other guy (not the taped one..) heck, if anyone is crazy enough to bid on it, shame on them as he does declare it a reprint at least
  • That bogus Mantle is GONE as is my text directly above

Ebay still has a fair amount of faults but at least they seem to be doing a much better job at removing these types of auctions.
