The Tower Mint. Souvenir shop for tokens or are these things coins? I have one "Solid Nickel Silver" with CASTELL CONWY on one side with a picture of a big castle. The other is "solid bronze" and has a more elaborate castle with "The Tower Of London" above it. No dates on the side that's showing in the case. They were gotten in 76 or 77.

    Sound like tokens or medals. Coins would bear the denomination.

    They may have more on the back but I haven't taken them out. Maybe I will. They look like they already have 25 year old fingerprints on them.

  • Ok, the other side of the silver one has a half horse half dragon half eagle half bat looking thing with "Y ddraig goch" under it. And LOTS of fingerprints around the edges.

    The other side of the bronze has one REALLY pissed off looking bird standing on the top of a wall or something and it says 1979. No denominations so they're tokens of some kind.

    Probably just London souvenirs.

    Nickel silver is the same as "German silver", I believe. An alloy including copper, zinc, and nickel. Not sure if it actually contains any real silver or not.

  • Hi,
    "Y ddraig goch"
    ddraig = dragon, goch = red, Y = The.
    The red dragon (Welsh has the words in a different order to English), this
    Dragon is on the Welsh flag.

    CASTELL CONWY = Conwy Castle, a castle unsurprisingly, in North Wales.

    The Tower of London at one stage held the Royal Mint (until about 1810)

    Your "Really pissed off bird" is either a French tourist - or more likely one
    of the famous Ravens associated with the Tower.

    4 halves make a whole???

    Ah you've stumbled upon the theory of dark matter. Each of the four halves are indeed halves and therefore make up two pictures in total, however half of each half is 'dark matter' (i suppose we should expect more of it on the darkside). Dark matter is inpercievable to the human eye, it is of course there but it's somewhere else unseeable. So one of those pictures is somewhere else and we can only see the other one. So it gives the elusion of quarters. However if you were to scientifically chuck the coin and measure the velocity you'd see that Colin is correct. A coin with just two halves would not travel as fast due to having a lower mass.

    The upshot of it is though, is that Colin is quite correct in his assumption that they are all indeed halves. image (Yes all four of them).]

    Some are halves, others are half nots
