Home Metal Detecting

Another Newbie: Equipment Recommendation

I've been thinking about getting metal detector for some time. A PM I received from a "master detector" who suggested a Garrett Ace 250 Metal Detector. I have to admit that it looks pretty good. What do you all think of this detector? I'm just looking for a starter detector that isn't a piece of crap. Thanks!!

Good machine, Tesoros are also pretty good starters. Very Light weight and durable.

Plus another GREAT thing about Tesoros is that they have a lifetime warranty, and the company itself is very nice to deal with. Absolutely NO problem with Tesoro!

It is amazing the number of bills that you will find when you are out detecting. When you see them laying there on the ground you just wonder if they're real at first. Sometimes out in the middle of no where there will be a bill laying there.

I am fairly new to detecting as well and highly recommend my Whites Prism III. The Prism II is $100 bucks less but doesnt have depth indication, which I personally have found to be worth the $100. I am constantly amazed at the tiny targets I pull from very deep with that detector. It's been great to me too.

I found a $20 bill in my mom's front lawn on Friday the 13th as I pulled up to her house... but it ended up being hers. Oh well.

  • Tootawl,

I can only comment on the Garrett machines as that is all that I have used. The Ace 250 is an awesome machine. I don't have the larger coil that has came out since late last year but I hear that alot of people are enjoying that larger coil for a little bit of added depth. Since I got my GTI 2500, I haven't used the 250, but my wife and older son have both used it and found some nice stuff with it.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the name brand machines--Garrett, Whites, Fisher, Minelab, etc. Just stay away from the cheaper made and Chinese made detectors.

Like I said, the only machines I have used have been the Garretts (2500 and Ace 250) but from hearing other people on other boards; if you buy a cheap detector, you more than likely will get frustrated and quit the hobby.

Whichever way you decide to go, have fun and Happy Hunting.

  • It's a great machine and easy (very easy) to use. Check out this other board where alot of Ace 250 users tell of their experiences with it. Treasure Depot Garrett Forum
