Hey, a Little Help! Which Clemente Rookie Do You Like Better?

OK Ladies, I'm thinking about going after one of these for my modest 1955 set. Which do you like better:

Maybe it's too hard to compare due to the quality / size of the scans, but any opinions are welcome.

Thanks!

  • depends if you're a corner man or centering I guess...I kind of like the top one due to the corners...the bottom one does have excellent centering though....
  • Personally, I like the second one. Better centering (and eye appeal) makes up for the bad corner on the lower right

  • it's a tough card to find well-centered - i like the 2nd one

Ordinarily I would say the second one as well, but that bottom right corner is really bad, especially in comparison to the other corners. I would take the top one.

Is that a small corner crease in the bottom left corner of the top one?

Is that white line to the right of his chin on the second card really on the card?? I like the first one for color or eye appeal leaving centering or the corner issues of the board. Tough choice, but that bottom right corner on the second card is pretty bad. As long as there is not a crease on the first card on the bottom right corner (based on current card orientation) then I would take the first one.

Corners, centering... whatever best matches the rest of your set, or the set that you're envisioning.

I like the centered one and it may turn out that the scan doesn't do the color justice and it may be just as nice as the top one.

I would choose the better centered one too!

I would usually take the better centered one, however in this case I might pass on both. The corners on teh centered one make the card look awfully low-end for the grade to me (even a 4). The corners and color look much, much better on the top one but that >90/10 LR centering is a killer for me. Normally on the 55's and 56's it seems you can get away with a bit more in the centering dept because of the gradient coloring on the right edges so any centering problems aren't as noticeable to the eye.

I agree that whichever one you choose, I would try and have it fit best with the rest of the cards you have, or are hoping to have. This is a great card to have in any grade. Best of luck in whatever choice you make.

Thanks everyone for the input. This card is so hard to find with decent centering. I wish the scan of the second one was better, it's hard to believe that bottom corner is as bad as it looks in the scan, although maybe it is. Being the condition sensitive guy I am (image), I think that card is better than any PSA 3 I own even with the corner. At one point before I was on Stone's 9.5 step program, I had a PSA 5 that was nearly identical to the top PSA 4 in centering and everything else except for that crease near the "R" in "Roberto".

  • The top shows a black smudge from the auto. and both L corners are damaged. Same money, I'd take the slightly worn centered card.

After thinking it over some more, I agree with those who say go for the better centered example.

I resized the 2nd one a bit - ya can't do much with the sharpness unless you have a better program.

It's currently on ebay with one bid at 299$. Not a bad card IMO.

What is the card worth in 4?

If you decide to go for it - I wish you luck! I don't own his RC - wouldn't mind having it tho.

  • Would wait & get a 5. 4's really put a damper on sets & if your other cards are higher grades. You don't want to pay that much & then be so different from the rest of your cards. But if you have the rest of the set in 4's, I like the 2nd one

Well, you centering buffs were correct. The nicely centered one sold for just under $468, or about $55 more than the one with nicer corners.

The "less centered" one ended first, so my plan was to bid the price of that card on the centered one, but it had already exceeded that price by the time I went to bid. Stone, thanks for blowing up that scan for us. The card looks a lot nicer in your scan (and on my giant monitor at work) than it does on my laptop. I think the buyer of each did fairly well, since it's hard to touch a PSA 5 for under $600 (or even $650) these days.

Thanks everyone for your input, it was fun to read people's thoughts.

    Peace,

I like the second one that has better centering.
