Reprint? Need help.

I am currently selling this card on E-bay:

Reprint?

First off, I had no idea that a 'Wilson Franks' issue would generate so much attention. The card is not in great condition. Anyway, I have received several e-mails telling me that the card is a reprint (which, I guess, probably means it is since I never get those e-mails).

I'm going to most likely pull the auction, but before I do I was hoping some of the folks on the board here could give me some guidance.

Any thoughts? Anyone familiar with this issue?

Thanks!

Well I've seen your auctions a number of times on ebay. You are a veteran seller and should know the solution unless I'm missing something here? Just send the card to PSA to get it authenticated.

Here's an authentic Jablonski that recently ended for $2,000. Auction
  • I have asked this question before but was snubbed by another member. I have no where near the expertise of many of the members here so when I look at a card that looks this old and beat up how could I possibly know or even think that it is a reprint? Of course the scarcity of a card may tip off the more educated collector, but the appearance looks "authentic" to me? It just looks like an old card to me. I hope you don't mind me asking and that someone can help me out here because I bid on these cards from time to time and would love to know how to tell.

And by the way Hub, I have also checked out Hubandwif auctions, even bid on a few (but lost), love your stuff...

Triplecrown, the short answer is if you can't tell the difference, you should only buy graded cards to be 100% certain. The long answer is that there are many different small things that just add up. Colors are slightly different, focus or depth of the clarity of the picture, the size of the borders, toning, unnatural wear, whether the borders are superwhite or cream. It all just adds up. You can get a good sense of it once you've examined originals up close and then compared them to fakes or reprints.

  • Yikes! I had no idea this was such a valuable card that could be potentially reprinted.

    BOOM!

That's me blowing up that auction. Thanks for all your help!

does the flashlight test and printing dots test work on these cards?
  • So how can you tell? Is it the borders? The coloring?
  • Thanks TripleCrown!

According to the Sportcard Counterfeit Detector - this set is on the list of those that were reprinted in their entirety.

Most of the cheesier reprints, IMO, will be "photo" reproductions such that the black lettering and borders will have a print dot texture under 10X.

But some issues like the 48B baseball - they set up a print plate for the back of the card - the problem is that fonts are not perfectly the same.

This is just some ideas - I know very little - I just enjoy discussing this stuff.

Can you scan the card instead? Really large and "attach" it?

  • Mike,

I will when I get home from work tonight. The card is reproduced above. I'm not sure how big I can get the picture, but I'll try.

  • So are we talking reprints that are done by card manufacturers (like a 1996 Topps Mantles Finest of a 1955 Bowman) type of reprint, or a reprint done by somebody with skills, Photoshop, and a good printer? Or maybe someone with access to a printing press in the "olden days". Also Stone, what the heck is the "Sportcard Counterfeit Detector"? This stuff is all a surprise to me!!!

  • I think it's more "counterfeit" than a reprint.

    << <i>I think it's more "counterfeit" than a reprint. >>

A set that is "reproduced" with the permission of the owner is a "reprint" set - some sets were unauthorized and IMO should be catagorized as courterfeit.

    Triple C

The first edition came out in 1992 and is a nice reference. I believe Krause came out with one more edition? I never got around to picking it up.

Another thing I would like to say about "reprint" vs. "counterfeit" - it involves intent.

The "intent" of a reprinter is to give someone who can't afford the original something to possess and have as a reference. That's why they are marked as such and some will even go as far as to change something about the card to make sure that there's no mistake - it's a reprint.

The "intent of the forger is to produce a "counterfeit" with the purpose of fooling someone into believing that it is the real deal.

  • Mike, thanks for the follow up info. Very much appreciated as always. I may try and grab a copy of either of the books you listed. It does look like really interesting stuff as you said and it couldn't hurt me to know since I do take chances on buying cards that are not graded professionally from time to time.
