I don't know much about the series other than what I have seen from going thru mint sets. I think these were about what I was expecting. The 67 was nice to get, I put it at a 66. Any one familiar with the series? I will be selling off the dup's so if some on has a need for any or a complete graded and non-graded set, let me know. Thanks for your comments / imput..........

Most just naturaly toned from the card holder. All are very nice, still have the cello intact on the sets. I was able to buy 8 sets of these from the original purchaser. (At a decent price and have been selecting my choices for grading. I am happy with the price paid, the coins, and the grades so far. Still have to work on a few, but hey, it another COMPLETED birthday set for me.

7...wish they were 8, but GOLD is just a bit out of my league cost wise. I am looking for the gold to complete the set but that too can wait til I find the right coin. Hobby, not investments. Next set I will be working on in my B-day sets is the Great Britian 1958 set...so everyone send me your high grade 1958 GB coins so I can complete the set.

Just kidding, but I would be interested as well ALL 1958 coins UNC or better.

The eight piece mint set doesn't have any gold in it. The only difference between the 7 and 8 piece sets is the 8-piece set has Y# 57 in it. This is a 500L silver coin.

I don't know what I was thinking...they are all 8 coin sets ...DAH....... Look at my submission above (1 each and a couple of extras. from 3 of the sets. For some reason I had the 1958 gold coin on my mind as I have yet to obtain it.

Is the y-56 different from the y-57?

Yes it is. The Y-56 is part of the series of Year 20 coinage under Pope Pius XII (the same as all of the other coins that you have listed). The Y-57 is the Sede Vacante coin for 1958, for the period between the death of Pius XII and the election of Pope John XXIII.

I also think that Krause might be wrong. Y-57 is not part of the 8-piece mint set (see this auction), and there exists a 9-piece set with the gold (see this auction). I do not remember ever seeing a 7-piece set (not that I've been looking long), but it would seem weird to me to leave out one of the 8 "cheaper" coins. Likewise, the high price in Krause for the 8-piece might lead one to think that it should contain the gold, which would be a 9-piece set. I'm pretty sure that Y-57 is available only individually, as it wouldn't make sense to include a Sede Vacante issue in a regular year mint set.

Also, to have a complete set, it looks like you would need two of the 5 Lire and 2 of the 50 Lire, as they each have two different varieties according to Krause (if it's correct).

That sounds the way I see it as well. I think the separate peice is the gold. All the sets I purchased were the 8 peice sets (No Gold) Thanks for the report, I concur with your findings.

The Sede 1958 piece was issued separately in a small red holder after the death of Pius and is not part of the annual coin set. The complete 1958 set contains 9 coins, two of which are L100 lire denominations, one gold and one steel. The 1958 is the first year of the L500 silver, the 1957 set was the first year of the L20.

Am not aware of two different 5 Lire and 50 Lire varieties in 1958.
