New Purchase. Edward VIII pattern

Hi. Just purchased a 1937 Edward VIII pattern silver proof double florin from an English dealer. It is minted in sterling silver and has a mintage of 975 pieces. It was also featured in the Spink July 2001 auction as lot 1713. It has Edward on the obverse and crowned cruciform shields on the reverse. It arrived today and I like the coin very much, but I am unable to do any research on it. I paid 12 pounds for it. Is it as special as it sounds or is it just another G.B. coin to add to my collection? Thanks

It's not a pattern. It's a modern copy, replica, counterfeit, or fake, depending on how one feels about these. image

The reality is there are no Edward VIII patterns that are from the 1936 timeframe... original issues... that a British dealer is going to sell for 12 pounds. I am sorry to write the bad news but that is the way it is...

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • It is not a copy or replica for no original exists.

It is not a counterfeit or fake for no original exists.

It is a fantasy piece. IIRC, there is a whole series of these Ed 8 pieces purportedly from various members of the Empire. Also, IIRC, they were all crown sized [5/-] and made of sterling silver. Just a set of 'might-have-beens'...

Also, IIRC, I believe that Spinks or Pinches authorized them and they came out in the 1980's or so...

It is a modern fantasy coin most probably by Donald Golder. All that matters is you like it very much. image

Thanks for the information. What I object to is that the dealer, Cavendish Collectables, advertised it as real. He said nothing about it being a fabtasy piece. Now I understand why I was the only bidder for the coin! One question. Is 12 pounds a fair price for it as a fantasy piece or did I pay too much? Thanks again.

I believe I got a 1879 Victoria sterling silver fantasy crown by Donald Golder (struck around 2000) a couple years back on eBay for about $30-$40. That would make your deal better than mine. I like the design and I felt the price was fair so I'm happy. image

I think 12 pounds is an okay price to pay. I got a couple of these-- one in silver and another in Cu-Ni. The Cu-Ni pieces are priced @1/3 of the silver ones. I like my coins, but they sure do not feel genuine just looking at it. I was showing them to a friend who has zero knowledge about numismatics and he told me instantly that the crown looked a fake!!
  • You can find them listed in Krause's Unusual Coins of the World cat..

Actually, an original version does exist. The last one to hit the market sold for a six figure sum.

1879 dated modern strike Victoria fantasy crown by Donald Golder with LC Wyon's St George slaying the dragon design on the reverse.
