Does anyone collect 1984 Donruss Champion cards?

Hi Guys, I was wondering if anyone collected 1984 Donruss Champion cards? They are a larger, postcard sized cards of then current and past superstars. I don't think that they have a set on the registry but they would look great in a PSA holder. I just picked up two unopened boxes just for the thrill of opening some packs. I was surprised at how nice these cards were. I love the artwork of Perez-Steele which is featured in this set for some of the Hall of Famers. The set only consists of 60 cards so it's not a big problem to complete a set. I completed three sets from these two boxes. I had a harder problem completing the Duke Snider puzzles. I only completed one and need about 6 more to complete another. I now have a small stack of extras cards and puzzle pieces left over. I have a checklist for a fourth set and second puzzle. If anyone has any of these cards or puzzle pieces for trade, let me know. Neil

  • Hi Guys, I might be getting three more boxes in. I know that these sets don't have much value ($5-$7 per set). However, I spent over 3 hours with these two boxes yesterday and I had a blast. It has been far too long since I opened up packs for the sheer enjoyment of it rather than for profit. I only collect PSA graded 50s cards now but my true roots in baseball are the mid 80s. Lots of memories from seeing these players again. I'm sure that after I get in some more boxes, I'll have some complete sets for sale or trade. If anyone is interested in any, let me know. Neil

I had to do a quick Ebay search to refresh my memory on those cards. I remember buying some of those back in the mid-80s. Loved 'em! Nice-looking cards and definitely would look good in a PSA holder.

  • Hi Guys, I ordered three more boxes of these cards and they should be in by tomorrow. I am going to have about 7-8 complete pack fresh sets for sale along with some extras if anyone is interested in any. How about $7.50 delivered for one set, $14 delivered for two sets or $20 delivered for three sets. I think that this is a fair price for these really great looking 20+ year old cards. I would also be interested in trades if anyone has some cards that they want to trade. Let me know at nbdowney@msn.com if anyone is interested. Thanks, Neil

Here is what the the Action All Stars look like in a PSA holder. I wished they (PSA) would make a correct size for these because they are great looking cards?

    Hi...

Can anyone tell me if they have seen the back variation of the Donruss Champions that is pictured on the right? Both of these cards are Nolan Ryan with the fronts looking just a bit different on the border only. The one with the white reverse has a white border on the front, but the one with the light brown reverse has more of a beige border. I am looking for another Nolan Ryan with the light brown reverse because the one I have has a water stain on it. Let me know what you think.

    Thanks...Donato

Donato: I've only ever seen the white reverse. Rare and crazy oddball - surprised that you might have that for Ryan ;-)

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I've only seen the Ryan that way. I've not seen another player with the light brown reverse.

I just pulled out my Perez dark back, and, I am sure like your Ryan, it is on very thin stock and mine has a curl to it almost like it might have been sheet cut or they were proofs. I seem to remember picking mine up on Ebay about 2 years ago.

    Kevin...

I will check mine when I get home from work tonight(about 3:00AM). I never noticed that the card stock may have been thinner. I will measure the thickness with a vernier and let you know if it is the same or thinner stock...Thanks for your input.

    Kevin...

I measured the thickness of the 2 cards using a very expensive caliper and I found them to be pretty much identical. The difference I did notice is that the card stock of the white back is much stiffer giving the illusion that it seems thicker but it's not. The brown stock card seems very flimsy and weak allowing it to bend easily giving the impression that it is thinner but it's not. At least that's the case with the 2 cards I have. Let me know if you see the same differences or if your brown stock card is actually thinner.

    Thanks...Donato

Your summary is right on. It is just a more flimsy stock which I equated to thickness. The flimsy stock might also account for why it appears slightly curled. Thanks for the measurements. Now if we just knew the source.

    Kevin...

Thanks for verifying yours for me. Unfortunately I don't know the source. I'm going through some of my stuff to see if I can remember where I got it and I will try to contact that person. I will let you know if I find anything out.

  • Hi Guys, As I was opening the packs from the 3 new boxes - I discovered something kinda cool. If you have the right combination of 12 players showing on the tops and bottoms of the packs, you can create a complete set of 60 cards without any extras. It's like having the fun and excitement of opening up sealed packs without having to have a bunch of extras that you really don't need or want. I was able to put together 4 sets of 12 packs using this system. There is no such system in trying to complete a puzzle. If anyone is interested in a complete set in 12 unopened packs, let me know. I also have 3 complete sets available (just the 60 cards). Neil

Received my cards and the extra Brett. Very nice. I will be sending the extra Brett in for grading. Looks like a 9.

    Thanks

  • I'm glad that you liked them. It is very hard to put together decent sets of these cards. Much harder than most would think. I have 3 more sets just like the one that I sent you if you ever need another. Neil
