Great Britain Grading help please

I bought this as a VG+. After a month of looking at it, I feel it's a very appropriate F. Opinions please...

I agree, but what would it be vis a vis English grading standards?

  • Hmm yeah i can go along with that. It's definately not VG in my opinion, it'd grade fine on a good day. I being fairly conservative would stick it as AF. Although i can imagine dealers marking it up as F.

What's bugging me is the harp on the reverse, it's too worn for Fine, that's a definate VG area. So net grade AF.
  • Just to add that i've just looked at the link provided by nencoin and i'm glad to see it's concurring with me.

Ah, sylvestius, once again you hit the mark. Your about fine seems to agree with the British F-12 Near FineThanks NEN, great to hear from you).

Am I wrong to prefer the American version of F-12 as fine?

I guess I didn't realize the wear on the harp was one of several key factors-I should have realized that but I was hung up with the obverse and the laurel crown.

F-12 is Fine. F-15 is choice Fine. Your coin is a no questions asked F-12.

Chris that's an excellent chart, I totally agree with it and had never seen it before in any of my visits to your website. By adding a few more terms from other countries (such as stmpl in the 63/64 category etc) it can become a very good reference chart for all European vs US grading.

For copper and bronze coins,'RD' or 'Red' designation means 100% mint brilliance. 'RB' or 'Red/Brown' represents anywhere from 10%-90% mint brilliance. Please check the coin image or the description for the percentage. 'BN' or 'Brown' means fully toned with little or no mint brilliance (red).

Is it so? An RB designation can be earned with only 10% red? I see more and more RB coins in BN holders lately ,that one would think that the minimum required is around 50% if not more, otherwise why would such a coin be in a MS 65BN slab? This one too is at least 40% red, much more than the picture suggests, but it didn't even get the bonus numerical point that NGC usually gives to compensate.

edited to apologize for derailing this thread, but I always wanted to ask this image
