81 topps questions...

Before I get this vending box and bust it, is there anything I need to know about the 81 Topps? Is centering bad, are diamond cuts prevalent?
Has anyone here busted any 81 topps ?

    I just opened several cello boxes. The centering is known for being poor. I did okay though.

    Centering has been my only problem. Although with a few of my cellos I had "dent's" in the top edge of a few of the cards. The corners in the cello were all very good and none of the cards were stuck together or anything. Overall I was very happy with my break a few months back.

    I think if I can pull a couple of nice centered star cards it should more than justify the 35 bucks for the vending box. Although I swore off vending a couple of months back after a disastrous 78 FB vending box. If if I dont get any cards worth a crap i think its worth the money just to rip it.

  • Look for centering and chipping issues. Some ink smudges, as well.

    Not to rub salt in an open wound, but I had a pretty decent 78 FB experience . . . LC Greenwood PSA 10 1/1. Flipped it for over $90.

    Good luck with the 81's, and more importantly, have fun!

    Most of mine were rough cuts and oc, miscuts,on the 78's I did get one Drew Pearson that looks like a 10 though, been meaning to send it in.

  • I've been under the impression that PSA will not dock a card for rough cuts . . . Next submission will include a few, so we'll see!

    In the last month or so I have busted open 3 81 topps wax and 2 cello boxes, and got NOTHING but garbage throughout.......totally dissapointing from that standpoint, but it was great for the $$ just to open them up for fun.

    What made them garbage ? Was it the centering, the wax stains , the corners?
    Did you get anything gradeable from them ??
    Where did you get the unopened boxes??

    Are you referring to FB or BB? My post was about BB. If you're referring to FB, I apologize.

    typical vending box issues (corner wear) from cards in the front and rear of the box. centering as mentioned by the others AND edge chipping. i've opened several 81t vending and chipping was the main issue.

    good luck and do some scans. i may bust a vending this weekend if your bust gets me going. image

    Thanks,

  • I have opened 1 cello, 1 wax, and 1 vending box from 81 in the last few months. My experiences have been bad. Lots of O/C and tilts.

    I had a Schmidt that I thought was a 10 contender, but it came back a 6! I missed a surface wrinkle.

    I collect mainly all star cards and pulled 14 from a vending box last week. Here is the run down:
    Lopes = OC L/R and tilted
    Garvey = OC L/R and T/B and tilted
    Dent(2) = Both centered, but with slight tilts
    Schmidt = OC T/B and slight tilt
    Kingman = Slight tilt
    Fisk = OC L/R and slight tilt
    Stone = OC
    Carlton = OC L/R and T/B with a tilt
    Molitor = OC L/R with a tilt
    Carew = OC T/B with a slight tilt
    Parker = OC L/R and T/B
    Bench = OC L/R and T/B
    Gossage = OC L/R

    Also, did anyone see that the 81 Parker PSA 10 1/1 that showed up on Ebay for about a day and then just disappeared?
