Mystery Photo

Just made this photo from an old glass negative. Can anyone identify the player? Looks like a catcher for the Cardinals from 1915-1930 or so?

Dodged his face? Not sure what you mean.
  • I believe the photograph is one of Eddie Ainsmith, who played for the Cardinals in 1922. The uniform was only used by the Cardinals for one year: 1922. The glove shows he was a catcher. The Cardinal catcher in 1922 was Ainsmith. In the bullpen section of www.baseballreference.com there is a picture of Ainsmith that resembles the photo. Ainsmith was a long-time catcher for the Washington Senators and once stole second, third, and home in the same inning.

    Thanks

    Randy,

Excellent detective work! I'd say you're probably right. The photo is a little larger. I cropped part of it to fit as an attachment to the message board. Any idea where this was taken? If you PM your e-mail address, I'll send you the full scan. I acquired the original glass negative not long ago. I assumed there might be collector interest in prints from the original ?
