Diamonds!!! (update on the beach gold rings)

Hi everyone,

Quick update on my post earlier this month: Beach Gold (x2)...

After taking the advice about checking the stones out under a magnifying glass and looking for impurities, I could see that the stones in the man's ring had impurities but the woman's ring did not. Today during my lunch, I decided to have the stones tested by a professional.

The stones in the man's gold ring were confirmed to be diamonds (all 7 of them add up to almost 1/4 carat). However, the stones in the woman's ring are not diamonds. Also found out that a ruby can be fairly inexpensive (one close to the size in the woman's ring could be about $30).

So, I'm pretty happy about the diamonds. Any of you have suggestions about how to sell it and get the best price?

Thanks and happy hunting,

Rick image

    nice stuff.

I was looking at a ring like that for me last month. The wife wouldn't buy it for me.

try and consign it to a local jeweler!

    WTG, Rick!

I suppose you could try eBaying it/them, though I have no experience with jewelry on eBay.

If you do, be sure to include the original "sand" pictures in addition to whatever others you might use.

I rather like those pictures. Something about gold in the sand is a little thrilling, moreso than gold in a velvet box or jeweler's display. image

OK, Ebay or consignment. Hope it can contribute to the new detector fund!

image that sounds about right.... wife springs for an expensive ring, husband gets wife a fake diamond ring image

  • Reminds me of the milk commercial where the guy walks into the kitchen
and the wife looks at him, gives him the "you're busted look" while she's
holding the empty milk carton. The guy has no clue why he's in trouble
this time and starts confessing to everything and finally says "if this is
about the ring... it's just as good as a diamond." She looks at her ring
and looks at him and says "you drank all the milk." His jaw hits the floor. image
(along with being a detector nut, I'm also a commercial nut image)
  • Nice going on the ring. I bet that made your day to hear that they were real. I got a good laugh out of the commercial that you told about below. You see, I have been overseas for the last seven years watching British commercials. Some of them are very funny and others you don't have a clue as to what they are advertising for.

  • Thanks Speer... I like the Cleo awards and those usually show some of the best
European commercials. My boss worked for Nissan for many years and he mentions
the "rocks and trees" commercial that came up- entire commercial never showed the
car... the dealers were saying, "we're not selling a lot of cars but we sure are
getting a lot of requests for rocks and trees!"

By the way, I was thinking before you come back, you could put together a post
showing your best finds since you've been over there... favorite items (coin, relic),
    oldest, strangest, etc.

    Take care and hh!

  • Rick,

I will do that. It hasn't been alot of stuff, but I will put up a post within a week or so. I still have a few days worth of detecting left here as long as the weather remains okay.

Looking forward to the final recap of your stay out there... HH!
  • I found a diamond encrusted gold cross a few months back as detailed here Link And had it appraised for $1,600.
Tried ebay with an opening bid of half that and failed to attract a single bid.
Of course, thats just me, but it seems to me that #1 You'll never get a serious offer without an appraisal and #2 Expect to get less than half of apprasial value, the jewelry market being the racket that it is.
Could try a pawn shop but expect much less than half of "what its worth" from that source.
Consignment or possibly an ad in local paper would probably be the best way to proceed.

  • Good points JJ and thanks for the reply.
I think your idea about consignment may provide the most...

< ... the jewelry market being the racket that it is.>

That's for sure. It cracks me up the way they market things...
They tried to tell my wife things like "it's an investment" when we bought
our wedding rings. My reply was, "so you're planning to sell it?!"
