Almost certainly counterfeit Chinese-aren't they?

I purchased these pieces beautifully framed at an antiques store. The low price was well worth the frame alone and I had no illusions that these were real coins (genuine knife and spade money in this condition aren't very cheap) but they were so beautifully mounted that I couldn't resist.

I haven't ID"d the cash yet.

This flat spade, the knife money, and the long foot spade are 700 BC to 225 BC.

It is hard to overstate the problem. The current market is overrun with fakes of ancient Chinese knife, spade, cash, and related cast bronze objects. Since about 1985 forgers in the PRC have developed new techniques in the service of faking bronze vessels and other antiquities of high value. These techniques are easily applied to coins. Reportedly, dealers will take rare coins to these factories where they are reproduced, with the correct metal composition, patination color and type of soil adhesion proper to that dynasty and type. Traditional methods of forgery detection (such as summarized in Jen) are impotent against these fakes, and the problem now extends down to some fairly inexpensive items.

The round coin is early Ming. It looks funky to me but I am not sure why.

The Hongwu tongbao (1368-1398) piece has odd looking calligraphy. Do you know if there is anything on the back?

If I ever remove the backing and take the frame apart I would know-not sure I'm going to do that unless I thought the pieces were real, and I don't think they are.

You are probably correct. Real Hongwu tongbao can be had cheaply, actually.
