Opening Mint set/proof sets regret!

I've pretty much cracked open or tore open every mint set and proof set (Silver and clad) from the late 1960s onward. Sure, I got some great unc coins for my Capital Plastics holders, and *I* know they came from mint sets, but no one else does. I took original mint sets and probably erased half the value. I'm still happy with my collection, but I have *serious* regret over doing it now, especially with the 1999-onwards quarters. All I would of had to have done is gotten a 10-set box from the mint and it would have looked really nice *and* retained the original unopened premium.
Having opened all of those sets, I have to say, don't do it!

The only thing I make sure of is a cross reference to the price guide and pop reports. If it is a "GEM" .... best remove it from where it is and get it slabbed

<< <i>How are they toning ? I have purchased a few mint sets over the years just to fill empty spots in whitman folders. I never had a regret, and could see where you may regret it. >>
Anything I put into my Capital Plastics boards look great, no toning. (I don't hate toning, but nothing has happened) The PDSS state quarters are in a Dansco album with no corrosion protection. For some reason, the 2000 silver proofs all got deep golden toning on the devices. My south Carolina silver proof, though, has an unattractive streak of what looks like rust in the fields.

I can imagine a lot!

I have also. I have placed all my KEN..proof halfs from 64- 98 in Intercept Shield 2x2 holders.
I had placed all the others in Whitmans' 2x2's
Just ordered new inercepts for cents & Ikes etc..
Its your set.........
I like looking at an individual coins instead of a bulky 5 coin set or whatever...........
I dislike the packaging on commems. Too much fluff around the coin; sleeve, box, velvet box, capsule. In that case I prefer slabbed for easy storage and viewing. It's not worth the submission fees to me to do them though so I keep them in the Mint box for now.

post that the opinion is about equal. Bob
ps Still undecided.
But they are MY sets and am very happy
I have in a Capital holder 56 to 63 Proof sets and they look great they where put in there some 20 years ago and look just as good as the day they where put in there
Old Whitman blue books turn the proofs a light blue target toning
I also put a set of Proof and mint sets together for my kids one for each kid the run is from 56 to 2005
Hope this helps
Remember they are YOUR sets collect what you like

I was soooo upside down in those coins when I did it and they took up so much space.
<< <i>Neutralized in acetone ? >>
It's the same as "stabilized in acetone". Volatile substances and the like are
dissolved and removed from the coin by strong solvents. This will minimize the
chances of the coin spotting or tarnishing in the future. Some coins like 1968-P
cents are always carbon spotted if left in the original packaging. Welcome aboard.
Most mint and proof sets are worth more dismantled than they are intact. The
total value of the coins in the set exceed the value of the original set. This is less
true for more recent dates.
