NYINC report with pix ... long

Arrived at the show for the opening bell. Off to search for some nice Canadian coppers. The bourse had the same floor plan as last year – 7 rooms in 3 sections. With most dealers occupying the same tables as last year. New this year was the presence of NGC and PCGS. Both were taking direct submissions. Lots of ancients and hammered available I’d say 50-70% of the material.
First stop was at Civitas Galleries. It was a pleasure to see Josh again and to meet Ben. Both are very nice young men and real easy to talk to. They had a large variety of 18th and 19th century material. No coppers but I did pick a nicely toned 1899 small 9s ten center.

Josh showed me two nice silver $’s (1935, 1936). I told him cash permitting I would swing back later and buy them if still available.
Next stop was Karl Stephens. Karl had a selection of Goetz material, cast bronzes, struck silvers, and patterns in various metals, that was awesome to look at. My buddy, Rich, bought 6 pieces. The smallest was a US nickel size silver struck piece “Kaiser at the front” with stunning blue toning. The largest was approx 4” cast bronze “Bavaria separation”. Cacheman and Cosmicdebris would have loved the selections. I picked 3 raw Canadian large cents

and 3 Colonial tokens

also a small cent size Halifax Ferry Token.

Next was Randy Weir (sp?) where I picked up this nice 1840 Nova Scotia Token

Picked up this 1906 PCGS MS63RB cent from Kruenzer for my registry set. This piece is 80% red and probably would have gone RED at ICCS. Nice Eddy cents have been tough to locate.

Talked with Ron Guth at the PCGS table. Had a very pleasant conversation with him regarding grading Canadian copper. I described the issue I had with the 1915 cent I posted about on another thread. He was able to access the PCGS graders database and told me that they were indeed concerned about the light print on the obverse, which is why it’s a RB and not a full RED. We also discussed the 1813 Swiss 40 Batz piece that I thought was an AU55 and PCGS graded MS64. When he looked it up in the database he said “the graders loved it”. He wouldn’t mention names but 2 of the 3 graders called it a 64, the 3rd called it a 62. Ron told me that if I truly disagree with the grade when the coin comes back to send it to his attention for review. He asked if I had any other submissions and he checked on the one crossover group that was rec’d on Jan 6. He said that the coins are in the grading room already. When I commented that they would be graded faster than the 50 days that’s posted on the site, he said that they have made some changes in the receiving and processing areas that will significantly reduce the wait. I asked if he reads the boards. He said yes mostly the lightside. I invited him to join us on the darkside. Hope to see him posting soon. I think PCGS has a superb asset with Ron.
Went to see Allen Berman but he was swamped with customers three deep waiting to get at his tables - I'll see him in West Haven in Feb. NEN was also setup. I asked for a price on a 1940 PCGS MS64 50c. James said $395 – not for a C$250 coin. I just shook my head and walked away stunned.
Stopped at the Doyle Auctions table and reviewed some of the Canadian lots – no copper but lots of half dollars. They are auctioning off the estate of Samuel Mills of Hawaii. If you like Hawaiian coins medals and tokens then I suggest you check this one out. The auction is March 23. link
Swung back around to Josh’s table and picked these two silver dollars. The both should go MS63 and the 35 has a shot at 64.

Overall there was very little nice Canadian material available. There was some of the typical common circ stuff and a few rolls of common UNC $s. I only saw 11 nice large cents and bought 4 of them. British silver and gold was well represented along with Australia, Germany, and NCLT stuff. Lots of activity at the ancients area with collectors going the boxes of unattributed dug coins.
Had a great time and looking forward to going back next year. Hope to see you there.
