Opinions on this Venetian piece?

Howdy all!

My family is originially from the Venice area, and so I've always wanted a medieval coin from there. But I'm terribly picky about these Venetian pieces so I still haven't pulled the trigger on anything.

I found the piece below for roughly $50 and would like your opinions on it. The detail and patina is exactly my definition of eye-appealing. But is it too good? I'm not experiencing GCL-style paranoia, just asking out of simple ignorance.. I don't know how to spot counterfeits! As for being picky, this is pretty nice despite the legends being mostly clipped off. Do you think I should still wait for a more complete specimen? Just thinking out loud here.. image

My completely non-expert opinion is that it's pretty cool looking, but I've never looked at thses before. If you are wanting a one-really-good-piece type coin, then maybe you should wait for one that is more complete (if they even exist?). Of course you can buy it, then if you are satisfied fine, or if not, you can hang on to it until something better comes along.

I have paid about the same amount for a similar looking coin.

Spoon, I'm selling this one for $50 shipped.
  • Many of the coins from this period are heavily clipped. And not all examples were even struck with full & complete legends. But examples with full, or nearly so, legends do exist. You won't find them every day, but they are not really all that difficult to locate if you seriously look for them.

So if it were me - I'd do some more looking.

This piece looks genuine but is very heavily clipped and the doge is not identifible (at least by the legend). $50 seems too expensive to me for what is essentially a damaged coin. I agree with GDJMSP that examples with legends are available and would be worth the wait (and probably not that much more expensive).

Hmm... I'm really tempted to go for python's example, but now I'm curious. Where are all these nice Venetian pieces hiding?? Ebay is a pain for these and places like VCoins barely have any available. Can someone provide references to dealers where I might find some (not necessarily of this type, I'm looking for any nice Venetian pieces--unfortunately, for the near future, I'm limited to around $100 or less!). PM if you like.
