1805 Bust Dime- L stamped in field

A fellow collector has an 1805 dime that has VG details but looks like its been "sweated" or been in the ground. Not all that bad looking. In the right field is stamped an "L" of the same design type that are seen on some 1818 quarters. Anyone heard of an "L" on Bust dimes?
