Olympic coin collectors-Torino 2006

Anyone collect olympic coins? I have a few, but don't buy them all.

The 2006 winter olympics start next month. All the coins are out. I haven't heard a peep.

I did a search, and the Royal Canadian mint is a distributor. The coins are pricey ($450 CDN for six silver coins, $895 CDN for a quarter ounce gold coin) and the designs are so-so. If you want a look you need Flash enabled in your browser:

I will not buy these.

  • Yes I do. Olympic coins minted before 1990 traditionally were struck in ridicious number of mintage and hence seem to be a lot cheaper. You should be able to pick most olympic coins prior those years at a reasonable price. Here is a few of mine:

1964 Tokyo Olympics 2 coin silver unc set:

1980 Moscow Olympics 28 silver proof set:

Another Moscow Olympics but platinum proof coin:

1998 Nagano silver and nickel proof set

And all of them except the platinum coin is definately a lot cheaper than the ridicious 450 CDN.

You can view the details of them at my omnicoin link.

    Edited for some silly mistakes.

  • I like the boxes. I don't have any Olympic coins with the original packaging.

For 450 CDN, I could get the entire 28 silver coin Montreal 1976 set.

However, I think the promoters are wise to limit the mintages and jack up the price. That way it creates a stronger aftermarket, and they can still raise close to the same amount of money. So many collectors that bought Olympic coins at issue price saw the price cut by 50% or more after issue because of the large mintages and large surcharges.
