1st submission to PSA (also 1st post)- help requested

my wife just got me a subscription to PSA for Christmas (great wife, huh?) and I need some help.

I am submitting my free submissions to PSA for my Reggie Jackson basic/master sets. so far I only have 2 cards that I am ready to send.

a 1969 Topps RC and a 1976 Topps. The problem is that I cannot tell if the 69 Topps could be trimmed. This is the only one that I have owned and I have no other '69 Topps to compare it to. it is slightly smaller than the '76 Topps Jackson, but when I compare it to other cards...it is just right.

Can anyone help?

also, what grades do you think the cards might pull?

  • Your Jackson looks pretty solid to me. Is the left lower corner presenting just an inkling of wear but not bad. Centering good to and I havent seen too many well centered Jackson's. My best guess is at the least a PSA 7 but I believe it may grade an 8. Nice cards and welcome to the boards.......rob

looks like there is a slight tilt in the cut but could be your scanner . if you look at the top , both sides flare to the right ever so slightly . this is caused by the sheet moving in the cutting process and which also could explain a some of the size variation. loop all the edges and they should all have the same grain and then you know your good. by the way , NICE looking card!

    yessir!
The way I see it, she is encouraging you to collect pieces of cardboard! Good luck with the submission.

  • does anyone know how long it takes for your collector club submission? mine was logged on the 26th.
  • I don't see that anyone addressed your trimming question. To me, the 69 Reggie RC does not look like it has enough border, especially top to bottom. Still looks like a nice card though.

edited to add: please let us know how the grades turn out. I hope they come back to suit you.

  • I was concerned about trimming, really left/right...that is where the card may be thin. when I compared it to other older Topps cards, it is the same top/bottom.

I will post the grades once I receive them, thanks
  • 1mouzon, hopefully it's a presentation set card as they had various sizes and many times were smaller than the standard. It can also come back from PSA as "does not meet minimum size requirements" which means it's not trimmed, but just too small for them to slab it.

overall, I'd say pretty good for a first submission. I'm a little disappointed in the Jackson RC. The '82 Rose, I'm shocked over. I think PSA may have missed something on that one.

I would resubmit the Jackson. It looks pretty good and sometimes they do that just to do it. I think it would get slabbed if you resub. Also, hold it up to another 69 that you have and measure it up. I bet it will be the same.

  • some previous owner of the 1982 Pete Rose Donruss Diamond King card must have been pretty desperate, besides being dishonest, to alter the card.

  • I cracked the '82 Rose out of a BGS 9.5 holder. subgrades were 10, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5. I guess it's good I only bought it for a few bucks.

    I thought it's be a crossover 10 for sure.
  • Why are people cracking cards out of holders before crossing them over? It makes no sense. If the card comes in high grade, they may automatically assume its legit and just grade it and not measure. Then in the event it doesn't cross, you get the card back in the original slab?

    Whats the justification for this?
  • You know what they say about ASSUME....assume nothing...

The other grading companies are less then credulous when it comes to scemes and making money...just because someone else says it's legit and a high grade.....don't expect PSA to let their guard down....they will do the full audit of a card and determine to their standards what it is..

Afterall, haven't you ever seen another companies GEM MINT 10 cards that were graded and obvious counterfiets??

From what I understood PSA won't take mixed orders...that's why I cracked it. I'll send it and the Jackson again w/ the next order I send in. Overall I'm really pleased. Especially w/ the Rickey Henderson RC. I've had that awhile.
  • I guess my point was, if you had a BGS or SGC 9.5/98 of card XYZ, why would you cracking it out from that case and submit to get a PSA 10 and risk it coming back lower and being worth less, especially if you bought it at SGC/BGS Gem Prices... just seems like an added risk.

And yeah assuming is wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if having the cards reviewed while encased is helpful in many situations.
