36 Down-1933 Goudey Sport Kings completed in psa 8 or better

With the receipt off the Nat Holman card(a pop 10 beauty) for the paltry sum of $21,835(hey, it was a beautiful 8) from JP Cohen of Memory Lane, I have completed my 36th set in psa 8 or better. The last two cards were the Holman won at a Memory Lane auction 6 months ago(JP gave me that long to pay and I only count sets completed when I receive the card) and the equally tough Gene Sarazen(pop 11) acquired in a trade with collecting legend Don Louchios. As I posted earlier, I acquired the Ruth, Cobb, Jones and several lower pop cards such as Jewtraw(pop 10-the only card Spence needs to finish his set in psa 8) and McNamara(pop 11) from Don in a major trade involving several low pop T206s.
This is my favorite completed set--Ruth, Cobb, Jones, Didrickson, Grange, Thorpe and 42 other legends. Finishing the set in 8.0 puts me tied for 5th and behind Scott Irelans, Don, Marshall and Charlie.

As an aside, I was interviewed by Holman's son a few years ago.

This brings completed sets to 36 in psa 8 or better as follows:

BASEBALL(20):
1936 S&S
1954 Topps
1956 Topps
1959 Fleer
1960 Fleer

1969 Topps Super
1970 Kelloggs

FOOTBALL(10):

Appreciate all the help on my sets. All sets are open on the registry--please e-mail Brian or me with cards I need.

  • Jim - Incredible accomplishment!!!

I had to show my wife, who thinks I spend too much on cards as it is, that there are collectors out there who spend more on one card than I have total value in my entire collection. Maybe she will go easy on me now image

I do enjoy reading about your quest; especially the trade with Don Louchios. Keep the news coming...

Also, if you are doing the public viewing of your card room, I am in Randolph NJ and would love the opportunity to see your collection.

  • It's amazing that a pop 10 card could go for $21K. In the Goudeys, a pop 10, even of a HOFer, wouldn't go that high. Were you in a bidding war against Donald Spence or someone else in the top 5 at the time? Or is there something extra special about Nat Holman that I don't know about (never heard his name, sorry for the ignorance).
  • Oh, I forgot - CONGRATS!!!!

    Chris,

Would love to have you come anytime--I live close by--e-mail me.

We will have a big collector/dealer/grader party at my house once the weather warms up.

    KennyLow,

Holman is a tough star card and I believe the last few have gone near $20,000. Its currently tied for lowest pop in 8 in the set. Since it was an auction do not know who I was bidding against but I was prepared to go one more increment higher(you can do crazy things when it comes down to the last card in a favorite vintage set).

Thanks Dave---it is an awesome set.

    The drive to 100 continues!
  • Jim:

    Rob Ruth here.

Congrats on knocking off another set.

One of these days, I need to find the time to get down to you place as well. Since I am presently working in North Jersey, I don't think it would be that far of a trip for me, but in 20 degree weather I would have to pass for the time being....image

    Rob,

Come on! New Jersey isn't exactly Alaska.

    Frank,

Always great to hear from you--the King of the 72s.

Hope you can make my next party.

  • Jim, just a thought, but if you had a clerk/assistant with nothing to do someday, maybe you can tell them to scan one of your sets and put up the picks in the Registry. The one's I'd be interested in seeing are:

    FB: 1955 Topps All-American
    Base: 1954 Topps

The reason I'd like to see these is because no one in the registries for these sets have scans of all the cards.
  • Jim,

Nice job on a great set ... One of my favs along with the 324 Goudey ... Jeff

    KennyLow,

Unlikely this would happen. First I work in NYC, my cards are in NJ, and technologically I am in the 1980s.

    Jeff,

Nice to hear from you--its been a while.

    Lillo,

Nice job on knocking off another one! I'm heading up to the post office today with the cards you purchased from me ... so you'll have sets number 37 and 38 crossed off your list pretty soon.

I like that idea of you hiring someone to scan your cards in. I think you should make that happen. I believe Mike Vanderjegt (sp? Colts kicker) might be looking for employment pretty soon! image

Good luck with the rest of your quest.

    Mike,

I will count the Stancraft but I don't think I should count the discs--they aren't cards.

I wouldn't count the coin sets I have.

Jim, Please don't ever say that in front of them. They suffer from a bad enough self-esteem problem as it is. You see ...

All of the other card years, use to laugh and call them names. They never let poor Crain Discs, join in any football card games.

... well, you know the rest.

The discs also like it if you hum that tune to them every now and then.
