Anyone still putting together 2005 aa retired sets?

Since all the talk about the topps all american sets has dried, up i figured i'd start a new thread.

I was curious how people's auto collections were going? I've pretty much hit a wall, since the SP list was released most the stuff is now untouchable on the bay. It would probably cost close to 10k...maybe even 15k to actually complete a set. Does anybody actually think a set will actually hold that value over time?

So far I have about $700 sunk into my set and have completed half of it, with about 10 refractors and 15 SPs, but it looks like i'm going to pull the plug. There's just too many other things that I find more desirable for the money...instead of dropping $600 on a sticker auto of barry sanders or john elway!

  • I believe prices will drop significantly in a year. Right now the product has high demand but there is still a lot at retail and hobby shops unopened. All modern issues seem 'hot' while new and set collectors try to fill their wants. After a year it dies down.

Case in point - the 2003 Topps AA single print rookies were hot for a while now you can buy all 50 for under a buck each. Autographs are cheap except for Palmer (and those may drop now that his knee is wrecked).

  • Just slightly moving this in a different direction for a moment. I'm using this set to try and get some auto's through the mail.
I really love the design and the stock used is good for a nice blue or black sharpie. Plus it's not that expensive so if I don't get the cards back it won't be a great loss.
I will post some pics when the cards start rolling in! image
  • where are you getting the addresses for the players? these cards would look far better with a sig instead of a sticker. Do you send the marker too...or just hope they use something nice?

  • There is a website I signed up for that has players addresses. It costs $15.00 per year but it shows you the success rate of all the players listed so you can see if you should even bother sending something or what players are most likely using autopen or a ghost signer. There are also a couple other sources you can buy from who are considered excellent sources for player addresses. Their catalogs run about $35.00 and are updated every year.
For the first round of nine cards I sent out I included brand new sharpies so I will see how many come back and if it's worth doing. If anybody is looking for a certain player let me know and I will try to get you an address.
  • does that catalog have golfers? I've been looking for david toms' address...LSU published a great poster this year celebrating 100 years of LSU golf or something....but i'd kill to get it signed.

  • Try this address. He seems to be real good about signing TTM so you may have a good shot of getting it done.
Include a nice note which seems to work with a lot of the players who sign.

So, I had just dropped my daughter's dowry on a case of 2006 Topps Heritage, which I won't see for a month. I stopped a Target and picked up 10 packs of All American from a retail box that had been thoroughly molested. I really just want to finish a base set, and I still need about 15 cards. I know I could buy a base set for what I spent on those 10 packs, but we all know the itch. So, I figured these packs would suppress my pack-ripping desires until the week of Feb. 27th. I got a couple of the cards I needed, and I pulled this card from one of the last packs. It is short printed isn't it?

    Way to go. Nice card.

Speaking of the All-American set, I have a lot of 2003 AA up for auction on ebay right now. I bought a few packs a few years back and never really got into them. I have no idea if they're worth anything, but they're only 99c. There are some silver ones and some patch cards.
  • wow....that's a pretty amazing pull from a thoroughly molested box! i bought a blaster box for giggles and realized what a waste...not one auto. that card was sp'd to 19.

Sorry for spamming up your post, but I thought some folks would be interested. I listed the Marcus Allen auto on ebay.
