At the home stretch, 95% on my 1965 Topps baseball set.

With the purchase last night of 2 cards I am now at the home stretch for my 65 topps baseball set. When i embarked on this journey I set a goal of having a set that was affordable (for me) and at a somewhat hi grade too. It currently sits at 7.81 and I had planned on the set being at 7.75 at completion. it has been a fun ride. I have made a few trading partners most notably the Duke of Mint who has been a great help in obtaining hard to come by 8's.

I also have been able to assemble my set in this grade within the budget I alotted myself 2 years ago. I have seen ups and downs and in betweens.

Anyway's i just wanted to share this milestone with you guys.

Nice work Steve. Great looking Mantle!!

How's the Mars set coming, should be about complete too?!?

I set the same 2 year goal for my '55 all american set. It's only 100 cards so I figure I'll try to buy one a week. The set books for about 3500 in PSA 6 so that is all my budget can handle and then some.

Of course, I've bought 14 of the commons already in the $10 to $20 range in the first month, so I need to slow down soon! image

Congrats on your set, best of luck finishing it.

    Shawn.

    Darn Steve!

    That's a great Mantle!!!

And congratulations on getting to 95%!

Unless someone is chasing a 60s set of that size, they have no idea how much fortitude it takes to stay on target and keep searching ebay and shows!

Good luck on finishing the set - especially at such a high grade!

    Steve,

hats off to you! i don't envision being anywhere near even 75% complete w/ 1969 topps master set for (at least) 3-4 years.

great diligence and vision to have things pan out the way they have. i am sure you had some luck along the way as well.

    Thanks guys.

I remm that series very well. I remm running home after school and seeing the games. Usually they were in the 4th or 5th inning by the time I got home. I also remm like it was yesterday when the Cards after getting the final out jumping on one another and asking my dad why they were doing that. The card pictured below was prolly my favorite of that set and i remm the day i had got one. I was 9 years old and we went to visit an elderly aunt in Conn. She gave me a silver half dollar and sent me down to the corner candy store where i bought a pack(or 10) and Willie was in there. this example is of course not that one.

Shawn.......yep I am at the home stretch too with the Mars Attacks set.

    Steve

    julen...........yep have had lotsa luck

czar...........not decided about upgrading. I guess if I can get a card at a great price yes, but I do not think i will actively seek out upgrades.

    Good for you.

    Nice job Steve.

Ah, the memories. I can still remember being 8 years old and going to the Kresge store, a precurser to KMart, and buying 10 packs of 1974 Topps Baseball for a dollar. Never really cared about keeping them in great condition. Thought the photos were cool, but really like spending the time going through all the stats on the back, could spend hours with the cards spread out on the bed and just reading the backs.

that is exactly what I did. i would play a game with them too. I would take a pad of paper and take a stack of hitters or pitchers and id shuffle them. i would then take 1 yr form each player and create a new player from them. It was great for basic math!

Before I figured that centering the card in the scanner was not a great idea!

The Berra is another card that I loved from that year. It amazed me that he was a player and a coach!

    Good for you.

  • Fantastic Steve. Congrats.

Anyone that tackles the big sets must be admired.

Hope to be there with the 59s one day. Not even close to you with the 65s yet. For now I'm building it with solid 7s, then upgrade to 8s or higher.

Why spend money twice? Solid 7's are prolly the best value out there. My next set will be in solid 6 and 7 (I am thinking of doing the 58 set)

The 59 set is another favorite of mine. of all the sets in the 50's that is the one I like the most after 52 Bowman, 55 Topps, and the 58's.

I love the colors that the 59's have.

    Steve-
Good luck as you move forward. Its always great to hear about a collector reaching his goal. I look forward to hearing about the completion of the set. You know, the first card you bought, the last card, the trades, all that stuff. It is the journey that I find fascinating. I can't collect everything, but on the boards it feels like I do!

By the way, that Berra looks great! Even more impressive that he was a manager the prior year!

Great thread.....you guys have conjured up some wonderful childhood memories. For me it was hockey cards though....my brother and I would buy 5 and then 10 cents packs and flip them against the wall for hours. At night we would pour over the stats while lying in bed (mom and dad thought we were sleeping).

Great job Steve....that '65 set is a gorgeous set. image

  • Love those WS cards! Congrats!

  • Congrats Steve! What a trek it must have been & what a feeling of accomplishment. I want to be you someday as I have amassed about 100 65's so far.

The funny thing about that card is that it is not a picture of the game winning HR for Mickey. Obviously it is Bob Gibson pitching & obviously it is Mickey's road jersey. Here is a little snipet of the real moment.

In New York for Game 3, fans were treated to a pitcher's duel, as Curt Simmons and Jim Bouton battled to a 1-1 draw through eight frames. Knuckleballer Barney Schultz, who pitched three solid innings of relief in Game 1, came in to pitch the ninth for St. Louis. Leading off, Mickey Mantle hammered Schultz's first pitch deep into the right-field stands for a game-winning homer.
Orioles cards from 1960 to today.

    Be good my brothers.

Ted you are correct! I noticed that too tonite.

actually in the photo we see the mick swinging thru the pitch and missing.

Great job, Steve! I always have a lot of respect for a collector who can complete a large set like that, it's not easy!

    The Yogi's off the chart!

I like when people talk about their experiences.

I too remember running home to catch the WS - the day games were so exciting - one of my friends had a small transistor radio and we would all share listening to it till we got home!

I remember telling my Yankee Stadium story about 6 months ago. No one ever forgets their first time at a major league ballpark!

    thanx for sharing

heh - my '65 set is probably about 30%, and if graded might average a 2 (with lots of qualifiers!).

Seriously, congrats on reaching your latest mile marker.

You are so right. That's one reason why I began with 7s, and also for financial reasons.

Maybe I'll be able to resist my urge for perfection and be happy with 7s.

Agree with your take on the 59s. The art deco design is attractive. It's also the year I was born.
