david please give my an accurate description of what altered sufaces means,does it mean the coin was tampered with and therefore is a counterfeit? bfb

Hi Brett,

Altered surfaces can mean a lot of things. Sometimes putty is applied to the surfaces to cover up marks. Sometimes a little nose grease is rubbed on the face of a silver dollar (thumbing.) Sometimes surfaces are ground down a little to remove marks. It's all altered surfaces.
