Grades received and I am pissed!!!

I have sent in many submissions of 1970 Glossy cards, receiving assorted grades from 5 to 9. I am sure I know how to asses the condition of these cards. Well my latest sub had some of what I considered the nicest Glossy cards I have ever seen. Was expecting a lot of 9's with a chance of a 10 or two. Almost never get an OC Qfer on these either. Look at this 585706 21140 , I am so fuming, I want to cancel my membership. Anyone ever feel this way about a submission?

That's why I request no qualifiers. Before I did, I would always get screwed w/ a qualifier on a highly graded card.

Sorry to see the bad results. From the looks of your grades, one would expect the cards to be in poor shape overall. I'm not very familar w/ the glossy set - so I'm not sure of how tough they are graded.

  • I have had the same thing happen, but that's what makes this game so tough. It happens to everyone. Some graders are tougher than others, it seems, and it's just the luck of the draw.

that hurts , I will never complain again . chaulk it up to 250 buxks down the tubes and think of all the times you have recieved high grades and enhanced the value of your cards. I am sure you will be ahead of the game. I ahd a similar sub not too long ago and I thought of all the cards that I bought for 50 buxks and were worth 1000 after I graded them and i felt a lot better and calmed down. a few beers helped as wellimage

  • Ouch, I think most of us have had at least one or two submissions that were graded tough, but there are a lot of 7s and lower in that one. With a number of past subs on these cards for experience, maybe a second look and if you still feel they are mostly 9s, try again.

Indeed the 313 did strike again! Its quite ironic. I first time I heard of the 313 was a week ago. Low and behold he graded my cards. Actually I am happy with the grades with the exception of the 2 2005 Topps Chrome Basketball BEN GORDON and EMEKA OKAFOR . Of all the cards I look to submit I though those 2 had the best chance of a 10. Sharpe corners, no surface scratches, good centering they went from the box to a toploader. I have 2 more subs one from November and a 5 dayer from this month, I hope 313 takes a few days off. Take a look!

  • I'm beginning to think the "313 grader"(if he actually exists) is a modern guy. He seems to be awfully tough on the vintage submissions. I had some sweet, sharp, centered 61 topps come back kind of low. I want to crack and resubmit but with my luck they'll come back 313 again. This guy has freakin killed me twice. I have 20+ that I am resubmitting from my last submission of 85 cards. I would be willing to wager 25-33% will grade higher. There are 8's in there that have razor corners, centering within the standards and awesome eye appeal. I actually had 20 glossys in there too and somehow those got the best grades. I got 3 9's on those but also got a few 5's that puzzel me. I have submitted over 2000 cards and usually have a pretty good idea of what I will get and for the glossies I have sent in nearly 250. I have only gotten one 10 on those so I never expect it, but I know that "313" is a guy I don't want looking at any of my cards.

Crack out the best ones and resubmit them!! Wait for a $5 special so it is not too spendy. The" Grader of Death" as he is known has smacked me on these glossies before. Many of my resubmits climbed from 6's to 8's and a bunch of7's and 8's went to 9's.. I know you have a great eye for submitting these cards because I've watched you build a top quality set over the past couple of years with your own submissions.. Best of luck!

If one grader is obviously tougher than the others and there is evidence of that (which it appears there is), it certainly behooves some of you to contact Joe Orlando and let him know. I'm sure they do hire new folks or re-assign people on occasion so it's not out of the question. Give as many real facts and evidence as you can. If you've submitted several different times involving the same type of issues, consider yourself knowledgable and are getting wildly inconsistent grades, indicate that. Tell him several collectors are having the same type of trouble (sight experiences from this thread).

State your case with facts, (maybe even include scans) be passionate but respectful and I'm betting he will listen. I went through the same thing a couple of years ago with '68 Topps. I'd submitted many before--knew the material--and was getting consistent grades until one submission that contained some of the finest I'd seen came back as 7's and 8's. Others felt the same way. I brought up the issue, included some samples and I think the consistency returned not long after. Grading IS subjective, but it's obviously in PSA's best interest to make sure the standards are as consistent as humanly possible.

if the theory of a grader being assigned a number (i.e. 313), then i agree with onlypsahockey ...I'm beginning to think the "313 grader"(if he actually exists) is a modern guy...

robbob, sorry about your luck on this one.

jmbkb4, where are you getting all of these 93 refractors??? great grades.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

Someone above stated, " I think 313 is a modern grading guy."I think this quote hits it right on the head! It seems to me that everything he/she does in the modern era is graded somewhat on the head and the vintage stuff takes a beating.. I did have one good experience with 313 on '71 kelloggs football. My grades popped on a Monday.. Maybe as the week goes on he/she gets more and more owly and everything takes a beating!! I have a sub due any day from 12/1... More '71 kelloggs football. I'm actually hoping for 313 on these!

I agree in spades, from all the evidence I have seen here in the past few weeks this is exactly the case. I have some vintage stuff that I should be getting gradeds on no later than Monday. If the 313 grades them I will post.
  • Here is a submission of modern cards I just got back with the "313" starting number. The grades were pretty much as expected. These Private Signings cards are very tough to get better than PSA 8s in my experience. The "Re-Colored" card was a real surprise. I didn't even check the card for recoloring.

I have seen some 314's graded lateley. I don't know if they ran out of serials for 313 or if it is a different grader. Just thought I would point this out.

  • So, if I understand this correctly, you all are saying that the first 3 cert numbers corresponds to the person who graded the cards? If so, I doubt the Grader of Death was 313 when this submission went through:

By far, the most brutal grades I have ever received were in 2 separate submissions, both with certs starting with "123".

Perhaps Darth Grader, aka Grader of Death has been reassigned from 123 to 313 or vice versa??

<< <i>I'm beginning to think the "313 grader"(if he actually exists) is a modern guy. He seems to be awfully tough on the vintage submissions. I had some sweet, sharp, centered 61 topps come back kind of low. I want to crack and resubmit but with my luck they'll come back 313 again. He must be a big believer in the "not creating wealth theory"image >>

I recently bought a few 1950's from 313 that I have thought they were actually a tad overgraded.
