OT - anyone know what skype is?

Got this email from someone in Portugal who owes me for two eBay auctions:

any idea what skype is?

One is its a service that allows voice over internet using your PC. I'm sure there are other meanings/companies with this name. Maybe he wants to speak with you. Maybe his speech is better than writing.

Skype is a program that allows you to speak / chat / talk over the internet for free and the software is free as well. All you need is a microphone and a ok internet connection.

I guess he found it difficult to type in English or awfully slow in typing.

If you have a laptop - you can use the speakers and mic builit into your laptop.
It also also has an "instant messaging" function, so you don't need to use the voice.
Great service. I use it often to partners in Europe.

BUT - I wouldn't load up your computer with software for just one deal.

Wow, skypes are in Portugal. I never would've guessed. I've actually never seen one, but when I was younger I used to go skype hunting with my older brother. Like I said, I never did see one.

When I was in the Boy Scouts, the older guys took us skype hunting. We never saw any, either.

Then after one hunt, they tried to send me to the supply shed to get twenty-five feet of shoreline and a quart of dehydrated water.

That sounds so much like when we used to send new crew chiefs out for a hundred feet of flight line. But my all time great was when I once put a maintenance team into a tizzy when I wrote in the log book that the A.S.H. Receiver was dirty. The avionics team never forgave me for that one. In my defense I did't write it up as a red X.

Skype - internet telephone company owned by eBay. This service allows you to talk to people anywhere from your computer provided if you have DSL or Broadband (Cable) service. You start out with a "basic" subscription which, for example, should you call another Skype customer, its free. Now, you can get whats called "SkypeIn" which you can purchase a phone number and it comes with free voicemail, and to use SkypeIn, you have to buy minutes. For more info, go to the Skype Website.

If both people have Skype it costs nothing to use. I regularly talk to my daughter in Australia at no cost. Be sure to download the latest version as the one prior to 2.0 had a security problem.
