What is that little nub of cardboard ??

What is that little extra nub of cardboard that you see, usually when looking through a 10x loupe on the corner of a card ? How does PSA deal with grading this?

I have cut off a few, I have found out you have to be very careful, it is very difficult to see without the loupe and almost impossible to hold the loupe and cut it. I was thinking if PSA didnt deduct for it I could just leave them on the card.

  • I recently submitted a card that had been detached from a cardboard border and had several of the extra cardboard pieces on the edge... came back a gem mt 10...

I think detached cards would probably be expected to have those on them. These are 85 topps baseball. It looks like the tool used to cut them that day might have been dull. It really cant be seen with the naked eye, but under magnification it can. I thought since PSA does not subract from a card for a rough cut they wouldnt subtract for this, but you never know.

  • In the steel industry we call that defect a "shear drag". It begins to show up when the shear blades begin to dull over time. Topps is getting the maximum life out of their cutting equipment.
QC was probably on a coffee break.

If you need a magnifying glass to see the shear drag on a piece of cardboard that sold in a pack for a quarter - I can't really be calling out the QC department on that....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I will post a scan tonight when I get home, along with my pulls from the rack case.
