85 topps rack case break

I opened the first box from my 85 topps baseball rack case last night. It was after midnight so I dont have any scans yet. ( will upload some tonight). The first box yielded two mcgwire's and two clemens rookies. Not dead on with centering but pretty nice. Also got two Puckett rookies that are very nicely centered and a nicely centered nolan Ryan. Overall the cards look fantastic ! I have a buttload of minor stars and commons that are dead centered, razor sharp and dripping wet with ink. I am hoping I can sell some of the Mcgwire's and Clemens to finance the grading of a lot of the set.
Sorry about not having any scans yet, but it was very late when I started busting these things out, tune in tonight for the show!

    Tenn

The Clemens yes, the McGwire...hmmmm...that may be a hard sell right now.

Some reporters were talking about his year's HOF and next year and they both said - it "appears" that McGwire took steroids and made a fool of himself in front of congress - I would take that as a NO for HOF on his first ballet.

    I'm disappointed.

Stone, I have been patroling E-bay past sells of McGwire and he seems to be selling fairly well right now. Not as well as when he hit all the hr's but still pretty well. I think the ones I pulled are probably 8's or 9 oc's. we will see.

  • not bad for the first box. I didn't have such good luck with an 85 topps rack box that i got off of ebay....NO clemens. Did receive one mcgwire and one puckett. They both came back PSA 9. oh well, good luck on the rest of your rack packs!

oh yeah, icould put together a lot of raw sets with what I have, However putting one together in the hi-grade that I want may be another story. Plus funds may get tight grading an almost 800 card set.

It seems that the cards I am pulling are all about the same per player, For instance I have Pete Rose all throughout and they all have been oc, I have also pulled boggs, mattingly, sandberg etc.. they have all been close to perfect. The clemens and Mcgwires have all been pretty close also slightly oc. Im getting a ton of very well centered commons and stars and minor stars, just not the big two(clemens and mcgwire) well centered.
And I dont know if anyone else has opened very many of these things but the record breakers seem impossible to get well centered. the as cards are difficult also.

    Very nice!

I wonder what the % is of perfectly centered Clemens?

What does a 9 go for anyway?

I got six Mcgwire's and Five Clemens overall, all of them are about the same quality as those I scanned. All will be a touch or more OC. i think all of them will grade at least an 8 with maybe one or more of the Mcgwires a 9. maybe with a qualifier. I got five pucketts all look to be 50/50 along with some perfectly centered boggs, Mattingly, sandberg, ryan, strawberry, jim rice, and tons of minor stars and commons that are sweeeeet.image

  • Looka like you had a good break and a lot of fun doing it. I know I'd rather break a case of this over a pack of exquisite.

Are the off centered cards all from the same sheet, and the well centered cards all from a different sheet. I believe the sheet letter is printed on the back of the card.
  • Very nice! Scans are a real treat to view. I, too, took advantage of the three-box rack case.

Also pulled this a few months back:

    keith hernandez funny quote:

"I'd stopped enjoying the coke high by '81. But I was still snorting in '82, and I'd sit there and say, 'Why am I doing this?' I was down to minimal use by '83, but the urges stayed with me through '85."

Last night for about an hour I went through about half of a 800 count box looking for perfectly centered cards. After i found about a dozen or so I would stop and hold them up to a bright light and look through my 10x loupe. if they looked good they went into Card Savers for grading later.Just from about 400 cards so far I have a stack of about 50, I think would grade a possible 10. And I still have over 3000 cards to go!

  • I believe it was pulled from a single rack box purchased off eBay.

Don't worry about the Butch Davis I needed. I bought one from someone else.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
