Rare Mike Schmidt Rookie

I just had to share one of the cards that I got results on today from a November submission. It is a 1973 Phillies Team Issue Postcards Mike Schmidt PSA 8. This is the first time this card has ever been graded. I would have been happy with a PSA 7. It makes the long wait for the results worth it.

Congratulations, I love finding those oddball items. To get it in an 8 is a bonus.

  • Can't wait to see it - please post. I have one also, but I didn't know PSA graded them. May send mine in.......

That's awesome. I didn't know there was a rookie year postcard of him.

Nice find! Another example of an item I never knew existed. Look forward to seeing it.

Is it a picture of just Schmidt, or the entire team?

  • I'll scan mine when I get home. It's just a B&W picture of Schmidt alone. I believe they're tied to Tastykake, although the company is not mentioned on the cards. Could be wrong.

I don't think Tastykake started formally issuing the cards until the 1980s. 1983 was their first color issue [very rare to find], and there is one B&W Tastykake issue prior to that. But I could be wrong, too.

  • When I purchased the card, it was described as from Tastykake. However, subsequent research revealed that it was a Phillie team card, but I am unsure whether the Tastykake tag still applies. I would guess not, in that the card doesn't mention the company, but who knows?
  • If they're grading these oversized cards, are they grading the Johnny Pros?

I don't know the size of the 1973 issue - but PSA does grade the 1983-1987 Phillies Tastykake cards. The 1988 and 1989 series are too big for the Tall Boy holders. The Johnny Pros are currently too big for the tall boy holders, too. I have 3-4 of those sitting at home if PSA ever changes their mind!

  • I tried to load a scan of the B&W and Johnny Pro Schmidts, but it said my scans were too big. I have since placed them in photobucket, although the scans are extremely small (sorry).

I can't remember the exact measurements but the Schmidt fell within the 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 tallboy guidelines. The photo of the Schmidt in the above post is the one that I sent in. I think I will hang on to this card as part of my somewhat modest Schmidt collection.

I also submitted some Reds team issued postcards from the 70's.

    Here are the results...

    1975 Reds team issue postcards

    Johnny Bench psa 8
    George Foster psa 8
    Cesar Geronimo psa 8
    Ken Griffey psa 8

1973 Reds team issue postcards. I had a huge lot of Bench that I wanted to get graded.

Johnny Bench psa 7 - two
Johnny Bench psa 8 - seven
Johnny Bench psa 9 - ten
Johnny Bench psa 10 - three
