Aikman, White among football Hall finalists

They joined Thurman Thomas and Warren Moon as finalists in their first year of eligibility. Results of the vote will be announced Feb. 4, the day before the Super Bowl in Detroit.

The two seniors candidates, former Dallas offensive tackle Rayfield Wright and former Oakland coach and current broadcaster John Madden, were chosen by a special committee last August and went straight to the finals. The other 13 were selected from a list of 25 semifinalists.

The other finalists are: linebackers Derrick Thomas and Harry Carson; defensive ends L.C. Greenwood and Claude Humphrey; offensive linemen Russ Grimm, Bob Kuechenberg and Gary Zimmerman; and wide receivers Michael Irvin and Art Monk.

A 39-member panel will vote on the finalists. A candidate must get 80 percent of the vote to be elected with a minimum of three and a maximum of six getting in. If fewer than three get 80 percent, the candidate with the next highest percentage will be elected.

Now for my votes.

White, Thurman Thomas, Moon, Art Monk, Wright,

I don't think Aikman gets in this year. He was in the right place at the right time. Hell, I could of thrown the ball with that line and Emmitt Smith. Now the big questions are does White go in as a Packer? Does Moon go in as an Oiler?

Let the rants begin!!!!

Moon as an Oiler &/or how about his CFL team
White I believe wanted to go in as a Packer but I could see them splitting it up with the Eagles and Packers

I don't believe that players in the Pro Football HOF "go in" under any one particular team. All NFL teams are listed, as are AFL teams. I don't think other leagues, like the USFL or CFL are recognized, however. Larry Csonka's bio lists only his NFL teams, but does at least mention his years in the WFL in the write up.

Which is a bit odd, because technically, it is the Pro Football HOF, not the NFL HOF. The CFL, WFL, USFL are/were Pro leagues, right? Should those stats be listed?

Here's hoping Harry Carson finally makes it.

You gotta be kiddin'? Aikman easily gets in this year.

<<< Now the big questions are does White go in as a Packer? >>>

White stated a number of times that he was going in as a Packer.

As much as I hated the Cowboys for Superbowl 30, I agree that Aikman should get in first year. I doubt the Cowboys would have won any Superbowls without somebody of his talent. I also think that Aikman's passing ability is a big part of Emmitt Smith's success, not the other way around. The Cardinals had one of the biggest and best Offensive lines and Emmitt semi floundered there. A big passing game will open up a big running game, and vice versa.

I disagree where this thread should be. If we want to collect the HOF Rookie set we all should discuss it here so we invest properly. Anyhow, great topic.

Im so sick and tired of hearing the same type statements as the one above about these guys ( Aikman,Emmitt and Irvin )

Everyone always wants to diminish what those guys did just because they were surrounded by great players.

Should we go and take out all of the great Steeler players of the 70's out of the Hall because there was so much talent on that team ?

How about the HOFer's that played on those terrific Packer teams of the 60's ?

Highly doubtful at this late date that there will be any spike in the prices of Aikman and White items when they are voted in. Everybody has already anticipated this event which is a sure thing - the prices of their collectable items already reflect this. Sometimes prices on Hall of Famer items actually drop right after the Hall of Fame ceremonies.
  • Stevek- it's really a crap shoot at this point whether prices go up or down. What I've found is that once a player gets elected and there is more media coverage, the casual fan gets involved and starts looking for that players RC cards or autograph items. You are right though. The steady/hard core collector will already have those items.

The rise or fall in price will depends totally on the cards population...There will be an initial spike for everyone elected as fabfrank stated because the casual collector will be buying. Cards of guys like Aikman, White, Thurman Thomas who are fairly easy to find in hugh grade will eventually drop back to pre-HOF levels. The HOFers that actually DROP in price over the next 6 months to a year like say the Barry Sanders RC did is 100% because of the high population. Its supply and demand at its finest...

But for guys like say Rayfield Wright or Claude Humphrey or even Gary Zimmerman who could get in, their cards will have a greater spike in price and a bigger upside based on the cards POP...

95% of HOF RCs have risen in price over the past 3 years...More than 50% of the cards in the set have doubled in price over the past 3 years...48 Leafs anyone???

Ask anyone who has purchased a PSA 8 1955 Benny Freidman (elected last year out of nowhere really) if the price has dropped. Ask anyone who has purchased an Elvin Bethea RC (elected out of nowhere a couple of years ago) if the card has dropped in price since he was elected...

This thread does belong here because there are over 40 HOF RC collections on the Registry, and everyone who doesnt collect guys who arent in the hall might want to get a jump start on the casual fan competition...

    Here's my prediction:
    Reggie White
    Warren Moon
    Troy Aikman
    Rayfield Wright
    Derrick Thomas

I forgot to list my picks before:

    White
    Madden

    My prediction is:

    Aikman
    White
    Monk
    Wright or Madden
    Thurman Thomas
    Grimm

I think Moon gets in - but in a few years. Same with Derrick Thomas - he's still a couple of years away. I don't think Irvin was a HOF caliber WR - not to mention his off the field problems. I would like to see either Harry Carson or L.C. Greenwood get in - but they may have a tough time with White being 1st year eligible. I can't wait!! I already have a PSA 10 rc of Aikman, PSA 9 rcs of White, Monk and Grimm and a PSA 8 rc of Wright.
