Big Submitters Don't Always Get the Breaks

Do you think that 4SC was thinking this one would come back a better grade?

Those at 4SC seem to know how to get the high grades initially and if they thought the Mantle should get a higher grade on a resubmit, they would also know how to make that happen as well.

Hmm. I don't think that even 4SC can slip a card past the graders with staple holes in it!

They shouldn't staple the cards to the submission form! LOL

FWIW, I did get a bump up on a psa 8 I bought from DSL, although it took a few tries. It actually went from being a psa 8 to a bvg 7 to a psa 9. It wasn't a high dollar card like this one, though.

But, seriously, forget about the favoritism angle. I just want to know where dsl and 4sc are finding all these vintage cards. I can't remember ever seeing an advertisement from one of them in any hobby publications. Is there a vintage card warehouse out there somewhere that I don't know about? I realize everyone can find some scores here and there, but pages upon pages of the stuff week after week?
  • The bids are at $160 now with just less than a day left....would that same card, from that seller, go for as much ungraded? Wouldn't we all ask "why didnt THEY have it graded" and guess that it wasn't graded because it's been altered?
If I have a Mantle of any kind, let alone the popular (and high $$) 50's cards, they're going into a legit holder immediately. From a sales standpoint, you've removed (most) the hint that it has been trimmed, recolored, etc.

Staple holes will always be an automatic 1 no matter who submits it.

They probably paid $3 to have it have graded so they are making money no matter what.

I would think that they get most of thier stuff from unopened material. I am thinking they buy case after case of late 70's and 80's unopened stuff and have a group of people look over it for pre-grading before they send it to Psa.

I was mostly talking about the high grade 50's, 60's, and early 70's cards that dsl and 4sc sell. I guess they could be getting some of that stuff from unopened material, but that seems very risky.

The early stuff I dont know for sure,However, I have seen 4sharp bid on some older cards on the bay, so it may come from there.

I wondered the same things about DSL. Every sport, plus some non-sport. Even if they get a break one some of the grading, the question is not if it is an 8, but PSA is calling it a 9. The question is where do they get the boatloads of 8's. I have emailed some other big sellers about where they come up and they say they have employees travel the country looking for nice old raw cards.
That seems like a lot of expense, but apparently it is worth it. I suppose you need to know where to look and most of don't where that place is.

Finding the nice old material isn't as hard as it seems...the dificulty is having the bankroll to travel to all of these places and make the large purchases. There are a lot of dealers with some really nice stuff on hand. Problem is, a lot of them ask graded prices for ungraded material. So you better have the bankroll to get a "bulk discount" and be darn sure it's going to grade and sell at or above what you are paying for. I have seen several guys that show up at any show I'm at and they are doing nothing but buying. You'll notice them by their carry on luggage being pulled behind them. Top half is all cash to purchase with, bottom half is cards they've picked up. Many of them will buy holdered cards that they feel can be upgraded, especially in beckett holders where the cards have high subs. it's all a game and money certainly helps you play.

And you're assuming they paid nothing for the card?
