Who collects or has Swedish Plate Money? +Pics

I know that I my collecting habits are strange. I have Viking Ships on coins and medals, Norwegian and Danish type set, Old Russian Copper, and Swedish Plate Money. I also have far too many coins that were purchased just because I liked them.

I would like to find out if there are any other collectors here who have a piece or two of Plate Money, or who collect them. Personally, I have 16 genuine pieces, and 15 copies of various types and qualities. I also have numerous books about them as well as extensive information and articles covering Plate Money.

I know of a few other collectors of these, but would like to find out if there are others who have them.

If anyone here ever needs information about them, please feel free to ask. Here are a couple of images.

This is a 1710 1/2 Daler plate.

This is a plate from the Nicobar shipwreck that sank in 1783 and was recovered in 1987

I hope that there are a couple others here that share my interest in these.

Unfortunately there are not any cheap ones. My youngest son lives in Norway, and he found a Nicobar plate in an antique shop that cost me a total of 90 Dollars including shipping. Non Nicobar plates are never below $500, and usually go much higher.

The point that must be remembered is that more than 41 million Dalers were minted, and only 15,000 plates are known to exist today. Most dates & denominations have less than 75 pieces for their total known population.

    Good luck in finding one.

  • Wow I wish I could buy one for 90 bucks, but he was so lucky to find it so low priced.

How low can Nicobar Plate money go?

    Thanks!

Refrema, nice topic. Of course I'd like to see pictures of all your plate money, including the copies, in order to compare them. How do you tell a copy from an original? How do you grade them? I remember that you said LordMinivan's plate money piece was a fine, and I can't see how it was so downgraded. I am curious about these interesting pieces of coinage.

  • Here is an image of my cheapest plate. It is from the Nicobar wreck, thin, has two holes in it, but I found it to be very interesting. I bought it from Australia, and paid about 60 dollars for it. When I got it here, I mounted it on a plaque with the sign below it, and have it in my living room.

So is that what corrosion looks like on plate money?? It's practically disintegrated. image Where did the Nicobar go down, in salt water? Because from what I understand, wrecks are well-preserved in the Baltic Sea due to the cold (for example, the Vasa ship was virtually perfectly preserved).

    Cool coin!

  • The Nicobar went down off the southern tip of South Africa. The diver who found it and I correspond sometimes, and he has offered to take me out to where it is. It is an interesting shipwreck and I have read the journal of one of the few sailors who survived the sinking. In those days sailing was very dangerous not much fun because about a third of the crew died between Denmark and where it sank.

The Nicobar carried about 5,000 plates when it left Denmark, and of those 3,800 were able to be identified. It is the largest single find ever of Swedish plates. There is a recent smaller find of a few hundred off the coast of the Cape Verde Islands. All of these plates were being sold as scrap copper in India after Sweden demonetized them 1776.

There is so much history associated with Swedish Plate Money that it becomes more interesting as you find out more information.

  • Hello LM,

I am glad you were able to sell your 2 Daler, 1750 Plate money. I am sorry I missed it, I wanted it for my own collection.

Thank you for posting the pictures of it and bringing up the topic of Platmynt coinage. These are the most interesting coins in the world to me.

The information that Bob posted in reply has been a wealth of knowledge on this subject.

I will let you all know the outcome of the copy, 1644, 10 Daler platmynt auction.

I am not sure how to desplay it if I get it. 43 pounds of copper coin!

    Take care, jeff

  • Since several members have requested more pictures, here are a few more that I just took.

This is my 8 Daler plate on the bookcase in my living room. I am holding a Lincoln cent in my hand for size comparison.

The Nicobar coin that my son found in an antique shop in Norway where he lives. It has lots of corrosion, but it only cost 90 dollars US.

Two different examples of the same plate copied.

---------------------Now for a few genuine plates --------------------

This plate is from 1716, but it was not revalidated as most of them were in 1716 with an additional round stamp. These are very hard to find.

1746 1 Daler from Ljusnedal Mint. Notice that the center stamp does not have the crossed arrows like the Avesta mint mark.

Just for fun, it is a bank from Sweden in the form of Plate money.

There are many more plates in my collection, but here are a few examples for everyone to see.

    I hope you enjoy them,

    Bob

  • I didn’t want to boar everyone with all of the images, since there are quite a few. I only posted a few pieces.

Thanks for the kind comments and the “WOWs” That is what everyone says when they see the 8 Daler Plate (all 26 pounds of it). It sits on a bookcase in the living room, and always gets comments. Actually during the 1600s in Sweden, it was quite a bit of money. 8 Dalers would have been about 3 to 4 weeks wages for a laborer.

In Reference to the drawing that Jeffrey911 posted, I have quite a few different images of the manufacture of plate money. These were drawn by a Swedish Artist in the 1700s and show many of the steps needed to manufacture them. When you study them, you wonder how many fingers were lost making Plate Money. They surely didn’t have OSHA there to watch.
