Ok now I am confused

If I submit a 78 Ryan, Thinking it is a 10, with a declared value of over 500.00, and it comes back an 8, with an smr value of much less than 500.00, Do I have to pay the higher grading fee? If I submit it with a declared value of an 8, Can it grade a 9 or 10? I never liked stars/commons distinction, I don't like this, How about X # of cards cost this, and so on. Or is that to easy?

Dont submit on the graded value, I always just go with what I paid for the card, if I cant remember I go for what I think the cards value is, in the grade I think it is in.

  • Sets, the rule of thumb is to "generously" pre-grade the card yourself and go with the SMR for that grade. So In your case I would take the value of the card in 8 not in 9 or 10. And even if you think it is going to definitely be a 9 maybe even a 10 you are still O.K. PSA is fairly generous with this I believe.

  • A perfect example of this is that I sent in a '83 Fleer Pete Rose card. I thought the card was probably a 9 and could possibly be a 10. But I sent it in with a modern submission, $5 per card, and declared its value at the 9 level. However, to my excitement it hit a 10 and was worth over $100. But I didn't have to pay a higher fee because that card was graded high after I sent it in. Hope this makes some sense.

  • I would suggest declaring a value for what you think the card will grade and what it is worth in the grade. It is my understanding the purposes of declaring a value is for insurance purposes when they ship it back to you and for PSA handling during the grading process.

Lets say you have a 1978 Ryan which you paid $50 raw. You think it will grade a PSA 9. I would put the declared value of what you think a PSA 9 of the card is worth. This way, you can recoup your cost if PSA should lose the card in the grading process or if it is lost in the mail when being shipped back to you. If it gets lost or damaged during return shipment, you can file a claim with the Post Office. I would imagine if it gets lost in the PSA grading process, PSA would refund the value.

Obviously, the higher you declare the value, the more it cost to ship. It is a decision you have to make.

I always submit my cards using the value they hold raw. I have never once had an issue but I understand that this limits the reimbursement I may be due if there is a problem on PSA's part with any card. I also have heard a rule of thumb is to consider all cards PSA 8 when declaring value.
  • What I don't really understand is why PSA has you put a declared value on the cards you send in in the first place. I know it's to know what proper service level and fee to submit at, and also for insurance purposes when they ship them back to you. But isn't that why you are sending the freakin cards into PSA in the first place, is to GET THEM GRADED! I don't know what the cards true value is worth, I pay an expert to tell me and then place it in a plastic holder and send it back to me. I have yet to get close to the declared value that I put on a submission total and what the actual SMR is for those cards when I receive them back. In some cases my estimate is substantially lower and in some cases it is substantially higher. It seems to me that PSA would have us give them our CC info and after they grade the cards figure out the SMR and ship them back with the appropriate insurance coverage. Just a thought.image
