Thoughts on bid rectractions

Original title was "anyone dealt with tytots on eBay," but I thought this title may be more appropriate for the opinions I am looking for...

Anyone know him?

He just bid on an auction of mine and retracted less than a minute later. I see that he has 64 retractions over the past 6 months and was wondering how anyone could do that?

I think he may put in a high bid to see what it would take to outbid someone and when it is too high, he retracts. I think that is detrimental to a seller because if he were to bid the amount he was willing to go and the other bidder was higher, then my item would sell to the higher bidder at the price above his highest. Rather than him bidding way high to see how high the other guy went and then retracting if he feels his outbid of the other guy is too high for him to pay and then my item sells way lower.

I think I may block him because I would rather him not win any of my auctions than for him to preview what it may take for him to win.

Does eBay have any rules against this type of act from a bidder?

I'm guessing you'd have to bring it to their attention:

    Accountability

Your total number of bid retractions in the past six months is displayed in your member profile.

eBay will thoroughly investigate bid retractions. Abuse of this feature may result in the suspension of your account. Bids retracted within the last 24 hours of listing can be viewed as bid shielding, which is a serious violation of our policy.

It is weird that his reason for the bid cancellation was "can not contact seller", yet he is actively bidding on five other of your auctions.

and as zef pointed out, the cancellation was less than one minute after placing the bid. How could anyone expect "contact with seller" in less than a minute. That is a bogus reason for the cancellation.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I have seen ebayer's with as many as 24 retractions within a 6 month period and ebay chose not to do anything about it. 64 must be a record.

  • Well at least we are approaching understanding of the Ebay definition of "ABUSE"!

I remember a thread here where someone (in the last 6 months) had over 120 bid retractions.

I have seen some ebay accounts with over 100 retractions. I remember carefully reading the ebay rules when I signed up a number of years ago. I thought I remembered reading that a certain number of retractions would get your account naru'd - but as usual ebay doesn't even enforce some of their own rules.

I have reported one guy that has over 65 NARU'ed accounts, and have reported his last five (all still active and opened in January), but Ebay chooses to do nothing. Its a billion dollar company that hides behind the slogan "buyer beware"......
  • Don't we have a board member that had about 69 retractions for 6 months. I think he is down to about 24 now after he had a whole thread discussing his retracting habits. I am sure he does it just to find out what the high bidder is willing to pay. It's that member that always brags about how cheap he is able to buy cards on Ebay from other board members. Can't think of who it was or find the thread.

I am not sure who that is, but I may want to stay away from him. See if you can remember and let us know.

  • Jordan,
I think bid retractions are evil. I understand that they have their place...for instance....

I bid a certain amount on a card with a reserve that had no other bids. I ask the seller through email "What will the shipping cost be to my zip code & What is your reserve?". Being mindful that the card is typically selling between 30-50 bucks. He responds with "$6 and as for the reserve you'll just have to wait and see." Like it's some kind of friggin' mystery game. I emailed back and said "no thanks. Sellers like you just waste bidders' time. Either you have a selling price or simply keep your item."
Now, I didn't retract but that would be a situation to do so. Also, learning of something that wasn't originally in the description or about the seller would also warrant a retraction.
I cannot think of any other good reason to retract. I've been on eBay for six years under three different ID's and have over 2500 transactions with ONE retraction. That was when a fellow board member warned me about the seller dumping a load of trimmed 75's on him that PSA holdered. The seller no longer participates, to my knowledge, on eBay.
Overall, a bidder with multiple retractions in the last month is a red flag for me.

I agree. I think they are trying to gain some type of advantage on the seller and as a seller, I would rather block them then have to deal with them.
