There is a $200 card I need that was offered to me for a trade deficit of $2000. What would you do? image I declined.

    x what?

The question is basically just saying that a price guide might be terribly wrong to begin with. I think the other part of the question has to do with relative value.

If it is a PSA 8 SMR $40 card I want - dropping $400 doesn't seem to bad.

If it is a $1,500 N173 cabinet I want - dropping over $2k can be a bit of a headache.

Much of the stuff I'm currently looking for is pretty darn rare and sometimes singular in nature - in which case price guides are often indicative of nothing even remotely relevant.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I agree with MikeSchmidt on this one. If the card is rare, even singular in it's grade then a multiplier of SMR is to be expected. If I am trading, and I am trading up on some cards, I always offer a bit of a premium to someone for thier card. For example, I am in the process of trying to get a PSA 10 Brady SP Authentic rc. SMR is $1100, beckett has it at $1400. I'm offering just over $1500 in cards, two cards are $800 and $400, the other $300 is made up of 5 or 6 smaller cards. I think as long as it's fair for both of you, and it's relatively close in fair market value (which in most cases is established) then do what you need to do. Now $2k for a $200 card... I can't think of many instances where that seems fair, but they probably do exist.

    Best of luck.

I agree with MikeSchmidt. Simply put I would not mind paying 10X SMR price on a card less that $50, but I would not pay 10X SMR on a card over $100.

    Good for you.
  • You saw what I would do, I had my 1800 bid in for a 250 card. I would have gladly paid that. SMR on the 50 Bowman Parnell is way off though.
Now looking for a 1950 Bowman Baseball Box as pictured below.
