What is the background on this set?
Looking at the registry, it looks like 7 people are collecting it. High grades seem pretty common with ~80% at PSA 8 or higher.

I have a complete Mint set including the box and Peg board. Bought it two years ago in Palm Springs,Calif, during a vacation. I would assume alot of high grades are in there. But i may just keep it ungraded.
Then again, this was a card game that was meant to be shuffled, dealt & handled. I have seen some nice high grade sets
both graded & ungraded, and I've seen some beat up ones too! Not worthy of a slab.
And since its nowhere near as popular as the Goudey, Diamond Stars & Play Ball sets of the day, you can pick up high grade HOFers
pretty reasonably and at a fraction of the other sets mentioned.
As coincidence, I purchased a complete graded set last week in PSA-8's & 9's. I did not register it, since they will be broken up.
So now & then complete sets can be had..jay

Completing a PSA 9 set is hard POPS are low and several cards will drive you nuts in PSA 9 the Appling, Cuyler, Demarre,Grimm,Harder,Medwick and Vosmik. The bulk of the PSA 10's in this set came from 1 submission(Until 6 months ago there were only 2-3 PSA 10's in total.)
The set itself was called "the NAtional Game and was issued by the S&S Game Company of Chicago. The Set was issued in 2 different formats. The cards come with a green felt back and a tan back. The Green cards were issued in a large game box and the Tan backs were issued in a significantly smaller box. The game originally cost a whopping 50 cents.
The game box was issued wih the 52 player cards (Seen on the registry) 1 directions for playing the game card and 1 directions for using the score card. In addition the box contained a peg board and a contest slip to be sent in with a letter explaining why you like the national game for cash awards (no amount specified on the slip).
The tan backs are significantly rarer but I do not believe they are as rare as the POP reports suggest. (I believe PSA only began labeling Tan backs 6 months to a year ago) Based on what I have seen with the cards my guess is the ratio of green to tan backs would be about 4 to 1.
Several hobby veterans have told me that the sets we find today came from one dealer and as late as the early 1980's could be had for around $30 (Robert Edwards auctions had a nice write up on it in their 2005 auction catalog) I can not remember the name of the dealer.....
I will finally complete my all PSA 9 set (not counting the directions cards or contest slips). Some time later this week as I finally acquired a Medwick in PSA 9. All told it took me about 3 years to do, and I had to buy 4 complete sets, made several trades and bought 2-3cards off of EBAY....
