1. 1914/1915 Cracker Jack - tough set, great card design, tons of HOF'ers, plus Joe Jackson!
2. 1956 Topps (Baseball) - gorgeous artwork, loaded with HOF'ers, Mantle returns to Topps.
3. 1911 T9 Turkey Red Cabinets/Boxing - Best looking set I've ever seen!

lil pcs of artwork
Mantle, Mays, Musial, Berra, Campy, Stengel, Snider, etc etc etc.
In true ex -ex/mnt grade they are beautiful and affordable.

My favorite is the complete Turkey Red set which consists of the T9 boxers you chose as #3.
The boxers are numbered #51 to 76, while the baseball subjects are numbered before and
after that from #1 to 126. Some agree that it is 1 set and not two that have been divided.
The T218 set has 153 cards incl boxers, bowlers, track & field etc... and thats considered
1 set. Same w/ the N28 & N29 Allen & Ginters, 33 Goudey Sports Kings, the Berk Ross sets etc..
To see firsthand the large (6 x 8") cabinet cards of the T3 baseball players & T9 boxers are a site to behold,
even commons look great, and to me thats a sign of a classic set where you can enjoy each card,
not just the superstars...jay

Glad to see you finally got on!
My list-
1. '15 Cracker Jacks- attainable in nicer shape than '14's, and 34 more players (one is duplicated in '14)
2.'34-36 Diamond Stars- art deco style that defined the era, great player selection, but alas, no Ruth or Gehrig
3. N162 Goodwin Champions- amazing artwork and design
4. Kalamazoo Bats- Great photography from baseballs early days. Nicer than Old Judges in my opinion
5. Turkey Red Cabinets- great design, beautiful cards
6. '41 PlayBall. Last set before WW2, great improvement on the '39 and '40 design. And the best players of the era, although missing Bob Feller.
7. '53 Bowman - clean images, great players.
8. '67 Topps- Ditto above, and every player in MLB.
Not on the list- T206 (prefer T204 or T205), '33 Goudey (the design changes a bit thru the set), '52 Topps (I like '52 Bowman better).
Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's
I agree - the T3's and T9's are gorgeous works of art - I just wish they were a little more affordable - really hurts dropping so much on commons! Player Bios would have been nice too but that's just being picky. I'm actually thinking about picking up some HOF'ers - what do you think the future of this set looks like - are you concerned at all that the pop report will just continue to grow and grow since PSA hasn't been grading them all that long (relatively speaking)?

your heroes for ghosts?
Nice list! I'm with you - kinda tired of the t206's and never have been a big 1952 Topps fan. Just not crazy about the design and I personally think the set (and Mantle card) is overrated.

your heroes for ghosts?
Great selections - CJs are just beautiful cards; I've yet to start collecting them. I've stayed away from the T3s as well. Both sets require a major committment that I'm just not ready to make at this time, but I love reading posts from youse guys that are collecting them. I recently started a 1941 Playball set in 5 and a Diamond Stars set in 6 - I think I've lost interest in the Playball set in 5, but the Diamond Stars are a great set which I will continue to build.
Favorite sets that I'm building:
1909-1911 Obaks
1950 Bowman
1963 Topps
and a slew of 19th and early 20th century tobacco nonsports.
I may also go back to building a quality 8 card set of W514 Black Sox. I had a raw Cicotte that I sold a year or so ago on ebay; but I see where a graded Gandil sold for about the same amount I sold my raw card for.

Part of the charm of the Turkey Reds is that they aren't for everyone as the cards are indeed pricey.
On Jan 3rd a Harry Lord PSA-5 went for $2481., a PSA-5 Joss (HOFer) went for $2100 w/ buyers premium
from Fusco auctions its $2457. and a Al Bridwell PSA-5 went for $1492.
Regarding the player bios, since as you stated they aren't included. I do the research and list each player's
bio on the registry. I never land alot at atime so to do 1 here and 2 there is more fun then tedious. My set
is #6, so feel free to check the bio's and scans out.
About the pop rising, that can be said about any set, as pops only go up and not down. Even if the pops doubled
there still isn't enough to go around. On Monday Jan 2nd the total PSA pop for T3's & T9's are 1098. So divide that
amongst 126 subjects, a couple of variations and the checklist and ad backs for the high #'s. And its way less then
10 a card across the board. Then take away the sets registered for T3 & T9's and that accounts for maybe 2/3 of
the population right there. And few of these are offered for sale or auction.
S w/ every one that PSA grades it takes 1 raw card out of circulation, and a chunk of the remaining raw cards have
pin/nail/tack holes in them and will get no grade higher then a PSA-1.
GAI also grades these and I for 1 would love to see the Pop report to see what they've graded as well, so I can
get a better grip on the tougher cards. SGC at this time does not grade these.
I have a feeling that eventually the cards will dry up in graded form, at least the mid grade cards. 9 months ago
the PSA pop report was at 332 on April 4. So thats 750+ graded in the last 9 months, sooner or later this figure
of almost a 100 per month cannot maintain. I have 18 cards in PSA now, a fellow collector has 30+
So thats a 50 or so boost. I have no others to submit, nor does he. Raws ones are getting tougher & tougher to
find.
If there was many more out there it would probably bring more collectors to collect them, so I do not ever
envision a glut of these and the prices plummeting. If you are careful and bid wisely there are some bargains.
A PSA-3 Bill Burns sold on Jan 6 for $306, a PSA-5 Red Ames (not the one I scanned) went for $575.
Ironically 2 high grades (for this set) of Walter Johnson ended on Jan 3. A PSA-5 went for $7457 and a 1/1 w/
none higher PSA-6 Johnson went for $8000.
Sorry to overload you w/ all the info...jay

Hassan T-202 Triple Folders, 1934 Goudey BB, 1951 Bowman FB, and 1952 Bowman BB, would round off my top five, in date order only.
Colors, Artwork , Style, Players, and so many other "intangibles" all figure in my selections.
Perhaps about 25-50 other sets, many listed prior, which I really do enjoy.
My second is 1975, this set has many memories for me as a childhood collector, so it has a special place in my collecting heart.
My 1934 Goudey Set
1)1952 Topps
2)1953 Bowman Color
3)1933 Goudey
4)1887 Allen & Ginter
5)1888 Goodwin
6)1940 Play Ball
7)1955 Topps
8)1957 Topps
9)T202 Tripole Folders
10)T206 1909-11
Unfortunately there is no correlation between my favorite sets and the 20 I have completed in psa 8 or better...but brealistically I like all the vintage and semi-vintage sets through the 60s.

<< <i>without a doubt the 1948 Bowman Baseball set, looks like pics your grandmother took at the family get together 60 years ago. >>
Then you'd love the '36 Goudey set, the '39 Playball set, and the '41 Browns and Cards team issues.

T206 - ditto
1967 Topps - best design of the mainstream issues, and I collect it
1957 Topps - great shots inside the old parks, first standard size issue, last year for two NY based teams
T3 - based on everything Jay just said ... hope to own an example soon
1915 Cracker Jack - cleaner than the 1914 issue ... hope to own an example soon

I see you have the 1888 Goodwin set in your list. I've been thinking and eyeing this set for the last few days. Do you own a set? The reason I ask is I don't see Davalillo in the PSA Registry for that set.
I love 52, 53 & 57 topps as well as 33 Delong (the Pepper Martin was my first card I ever owned outside of cards I got in packs).
More currently, I love 77s, 78s, 81 Donruss, 85 Donruss...heck--I like 'em all. Although 1968 and 1973 are certainly not favorites of mine. Very bland. I like 75's as long as they look like Frank Smith's and I dig 71's when they look like Scott Tipton's.
Favorite card of all time is the '52 Topps Mays followed by the '78 Topps Reggie Jackson.

Pre-war: 38 Goudeys (second series in paticular), T-3s and 1887s Allen&Ginters (N28?)
Post-War: 1956 Topps, 1967 Topps and then 75 Topps.
Modern or thereabouts: 1984 Topps BB and 1985-86 Topp/OPC Hockey (love the simple design).

I don't collect the Goodwin but I have given serious thought to doing so(so many sets--so little time--what should I do?)

2. 1934-36 Diamond Stars - for the same reasons Griffins mentions
3. 1938 Goudey
4. T205
5. 1953 Topps, in EX-MT or better condition - each card is a work of art, and the large size makes them stand out even more
6. 1939 Goudey R303 - oversized premium cards, gorgeous images
7. 1938 Dixie Premiums - absolutely stunning artwork
8. 1952 Topps
9. 1951 Bowman
10. 1961-62 Fleer basketball
-Al
I didn't take it as hostile but if you feel guilty pull some of those 62 Topps psa 8s off ebay and sell them to me.
Did anyone mention 51 Topps Magic?

<< <i>the '68 Action All Star set i one of my favorites due to it being very different and scarce. Also love the '69 Supers set for its simplicity and beautiful photos. Almost done on complete sets and also have an unopened pack of each--now those are rare!! >>
Nice choices!! Are you saying you have packs of the '68 Action All-Star set and '69 Supers?
Also, welcome to the boards!!!
