1980 unopened

I was thinking about buying a wax box of 80 topps, I hear chipping of the edges can be brutal with this set. Has anyone had any 1980 unopened experience?

I recently bought a 1980 wax from bbcexchange and didn't have chipping issues. Not too many great cards but I got my money's worth in cards and/or fun ripping! Got a few "likely" 10's. Got one Henderson... probably an 8 but maybe a 9 if the grader is drunk.

Isn't centering one of the biggest issues with 80s baseball?

it all depends on what you are looking for:

    1-thrill of opening
    2-truly psa 9 or 10 nq 1980 topps

i would honestly not buy any 1980 topps rack packs, unless they come from unsealed source. boxes are much better way to go and somewhat less expensive. i recently won a leland's auction for an unopened case of 1980 topps rack packs and that really opened my eyes to true nm/mt quality cards. that being said, there were tons of cards w/ perfect everything, but a slightly dinged corner or a slight chipping on the bottom front of the card. totally frustrating, but (as you have said) come w/ 1980 topps territory.

most of rack packs on e-bay are like $25 a pop and the cards are dinged, chipped and not even worth opening.

all depends on you though, just my experience.

    good luck

    larryallan,

take a closer look at the really nice 1980 topps cards you pulled from the bbce box. the chips are uber-subtle but very present.

I am at the office as I see the questions so can't check for the chipping but Julen is probably right since he opened a few of the packs and I tend to take a quick look, see 4 sharp corners, nice centering, and package it for PSA (read: I have two small kids at home so don't have a lot of extra time for quality control). I didn't find gum/wax stains to be as big a problem as I have had with some other boxes I have opened. I sent in LeFlore, Cooper, Murray, Murphy, Henderson, Ryan and Yaz today to PSA. If any come back as a 10, as I hope for a couple fo them, I will post. Happy Monday!
