Ebay Whining: Got Them Seller Blues...

So you want to sell some extra cards.
You write up an honest ad, include nice big colorful scans (not just the freebie 300px x 400px Ebay gives you), start with a $.99 opening bid...

And a day before the auction is to close your 250 cards are going for $.02 each. 1972 baseball in Exmt - NM/Mt shape with stars like Orlando Cepeda, Lou Brock and HR Leaders.

Then other times you throw a piece of junk up - say a 1987 Peewee Herman doll - and expect a buck or two - and the thing sells for $20.

I just don't get it. I just don't get it...

Any seller horror stories you want to whine about?

What's the point of complaining about the price of your auction a day before it's ending? Things can change rapidly in a day - you know that.
  • I have to admit for the most part I have been lucky when selling on Ebay. I really havn't taken a bath on anything. I guess I will keep my fingures crossed!

    Not that rapidly.

Most of what I've sold has at most doubled in price from the day before. Granted, I don't sell high end stuff which seems to have more flexibility in pricing.

Not a 72s fan, but love that Cubs Team card. Love how they always did the head shots on those cubs team cards year after year. That one is one of the best.

Provide a link to the auction if you wish. I'd have to see the auction and the quality of your scans for a firmer prediction but your current $5 high bid should rise to between about $40 - $60.

Final price will depend on the other cards, whether there are high numbers, etc.
  • I don't worry about the price until the last 5 minutes. What I have found is that in the last couple minutes the price goes up about 50% - gotta love them snipers. image There's no way to really know what something will sell for until it's over. Most of the time I'm pleasantly surprised.

BTW, nice write-up and presentation on the auction. I think you'll do alright. Heck, I may bid on it myself...

Oh...you had the link - with that black highlighting there I missed it initially.

Problems with getting a high bid here:

    1. Biggest mistake - mixing in a pen marked card with a "high quality" lot - very bad idea. Those Yaz and checklist cards are worth "nothing" anyway and detracts from a "high quality" presentation. Those fillers shouldn't be on there either.

    2. The Cepeda, not a high demand card anyway is slightly printed on an angle - I hate cards like that. The leaders card is badly off center.

    3. Also big - no high numbers, not even "lower" high numbers.

Overall though a very good, honest, well designed presentation...it's just that the cards themselves are not condusive to receiving a high bid. Hey, I hope I'm wrong and you receive over $100 for the lot -stranger things have happened.
  • I almost always start my auctions at the least i would accept for my cards. That way you do not have to worry about it going for far less then what you expect.

I salute you for describing your cards so honestly, but sometimes less is more.

In the spirit of constructive criticism,
here's a few of the things that people put in their auction descriptions that tend to make me bid less.

    1. As stevek mentioned, junky fillers in with a nice lot.
Rightly or wrongly, I tend to adjust my bid based on the worst cards I see.

    2. Any mention that the seller uses PSA.
I can then pretty well rule out that I'll be able to pick up a few choice cards among the lot.

    3. An indication that the seller is working on the set.
If these cards were not good enough for his set, why would I want to put them in mine ?

Just my opinion. Maybe others feel differently about this stuff ...
