1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar

I need your opinion on a coin I was shown today at a Museum near my home, it was a rare and the most beautiful coin I ever had seen this old, it was a 1795 Us Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, I had to edit this message because of some crackheads not thinking my comments posted earlier were real, what value do you think a g/1795 vg 1795 f 1795 vf 1795 au 1795 would be, I am a investor, not a hoard collector like some dealers I see at all of the conventions with boxes and cases full of overpriced junk. So any bright minded persons out here with class can help me, please do.

What you are writing about simply does not match reality. A 1795 Flowing Hair dollar bids between $2,000 and $4,000 in VF (there are three major varieties for the year) and bids near $10,000 in EF. If these coins were real then they couldn't have been offered for so little in such high grade.

Tom B, I wouldn't be so sure. Museums (especially smaller ones) are very cavalier about how they treat their items. The curators have small special interests that they are expert in (in the best case) and know and care about little else than preserving their position and getting bodies in the door.

I speak from personal experience and it cost me a "loaned" gun.

Normally the security guards do not show coins or make offers to sell them. At least not in my experience. Very odd.

BU or UNC flowing hair dollars ar $50,000+ coins. You would think a museum would know what their coins are worth to better than a factor of 10 to 1.

Just so that folks might follow this...ahem...contributor better; the original posting said that he was at a museum gift shop today and a security guard produced a box containing four perfect 1795 Flowing Hair dollars. The coins were apparently real and uncirculated and the museum's benefactors wanted serious offers for the coins but would sell them at $4,000 each. This...ahem...contributor then wanted to know the bid prices of said dollars from VF on up and added that even though he doesn't know how to grade this series he knew they were perfect and the most beautiful coins he had ever seen of this age. This is where the skepticism comes in from the responders to the thread.

The subsequently edited post by this...ahem...contributor was a rambling, incoherent spew that made absolutely no sense whatsoever and has since been changed to attack those who responded as sentient beings. It seems we either have a new, poor troll-in-training or someone truly stupid on board.

If these facts are real, you need to find $16,000 as quickly as possible and bring it to that security guard. Anything less would be foolhardy. I believe you can get $2,000,000 on most any day from the government official in Nigeria who is looking to expatriate funds.

Changing your original post makes the content *cough* questionable. Your newness to the board, your rambling invective, and your use of caps does little to help. Not so hard from my perspective to see the members here have a little fun with your *ahem* presentation of facts.

If you are serious about the hobby - if you are willing to apply yourself even a little bit to this pursuit - and you ask reasonable questions showing that you've done even a little homework on your own, then the folks here will go out of their way to be helpful.

OTOH, if you comport yourself like a dork and a troll, you will receive response in kind.

Maybe it's just me, but if I ran into four perfect 1795 halves, I would probably buy them and not say anything to anyone about it. After that I would release them one by one into the market. You would make a lot more money that way.

Weekend comedians at work again... I see. I thought the original post was funny, but some of the follow up responses are great. Who knew that we'd find a positive use for all those corrupt Nigerian officials? Who knew that knowing a sprinkling of Latin is useful for counterfeit detection? Best of all, who knew that the word "ahem" has mutiple entendres?!?

Assuming that the initial ...ahem... contributor to this thread is being genuine, I find it ironic what he chose for his handle and yet can't see either a fool's deal or fool's bargain when he sees one...

The handle - DiscountGuy - is particularly funny when applied to the other thread where he says he bought 2005 Buffalo Detached Leg error coins for $12 each, and was upset he could not sell them for over $50 each, even though millions of people who watch Coin Vault (or something) think they are worth $400.

    Where is the discount?

When those 4 coins are "gone" Monday morning (and Museum attendance breaks all records) there will be another 4 just like them waiting for the next round of buyers....and at $4000 each again.
Those museum officials are a lot smarter than they look....guards too.

DG, you have received plenty of help from here. Go buy the darn coins as they are rips even in XF. Then bring us back photos once you've sumbitted them to PCGS or NGC.

If you don't have the cash, contact your nearest dealer to do the deal for you and cut you in a %. This wouldn't be the Smithsonian

The damage to your handle (or reputation) was done by your own actions through your posts. Read what I posted and go re-read the thread I am talking about. You were given good advice, but choose to ignore it because it does not indicate you can sell your $12 purchases for $400 each.

You will find most people on these boards are happy to help newcomers. We were all less experienced at one time, and the majority of us have benefitted from the knowledge shared on these boards. But when a newcomer does not listen, acts arogant, thinks they will make a killing on deals most board members know will never pan out, that can drive people to become more critical of the newcomer.

Here is help. From my May 2005 Grey Sheet Quarterly II.

Editted to correct to dollar, not half dollar. Thanks TomB!

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar (3 leavevariety)
    Good $925
    Very Good $1,325
    Fine $2,450
    Very Fine $4,250
    Extremely Fine $9,250
    Almost Uncirculated $15,000
    MS60 $30,000
    MS63 $60,000
    MS64 $100,000
    MS65 $266,000
    Perfect: Name your price

These prices are over 6 months old, so you may want to invest $17 in a set of sheets for yourself.

Please keep in mind that the original poster is writing about dollars, not half dollars. Therefore, they are a bit more scarce and plenty more expensive.

  • Thanks For the help, On the prices, that is what I asked for in the first place. The facts were true, I happened to be in the right place at the right time.
I can't look at a 1795 silver dollar and tell what grade it is, I know these coins I witness were beauties. Sorry for any insults in counter retal.
  • TROLL ALERT!! TROLL ALERT!!

PLEASE CEASE FEEDING THE TROLLS SO THAT THEY MAY RETURN TO THEIR HOMES UNDER THE BRIDGE.

    THANK YOU.

    Looking for alot of crap.
  • ok - I figured it out. Some security guard saw a turd-arse in his museum today and showed said turd-arse some replicas, probably pewter "coins" with lovely handcrafted seams around the edges. Said turd-arse believes these to be real and will probably steal some old ladies' welfare checks in the hopes on "investing" in these rare pewter beauties.
Everything I write is my opinion.

    Looking for alot of crap.

  • Robert B, you are a veteran of what? BS coming out your mouth. You have a foul mouth!!! You give many Vets a bad name when you open your foul mouth that way.
  • Well, did you go back and buy them?
  • I will never tell, but I will let all of you know this!!! I got some real coin books, and prices on the coins and If I did, I hope they grade high. There are two nice ones left in the case in one of their 3 gift shops at the museum. Maybe this will help find out where the museum and coins might be. A famous farmer died on his land that he received when his brother died. At the age of 16 he took a job as a surveyor, and the property he is buried on is still not control by our government as of yet, it is ran by private donations and admission fees as of today. Again 2 flowing hair silver dollars still available as of noon today, one 2 leaf and the other 3 leaf. This person like myself might of stated things a little misleading because I never thought I would see one of these coins so beautiful in person, so I never lied about this story and the person who owned this land NEVER TOLD A LIE.

A quick summary to those who are late to this thread:

I'm an investor but don't know how to grade. Can't tell a VG from an AU. But I know great quality when I see it in a museum.
2 of these 1795 dollars are now gone in the past 24-48 hours. Some farmer probably donated them a long time ago so I believe they are legit

Last I checked a 1795 half was just as scarce a coin (possibly scarcer) than a 1795 dollar. Value-wise I think the half has it all over the dollar.

But be assured, even though DG can't grade them, he knows they are real.

Let's see would that be Mount Vernon or Monticello?
