think this auto is real?

I am looking at this proset card but I have 5 other Emmitt autos and they pretty much look the same. The thing that bothers me about it is the second giant letter (I think its an s) isnt rounded , its pointed. All the other ones I have are rounded. The second card is mine that I know is real for comparison. Anyone have any input?

  • I would be concerned about that too. It is a dramatic variation in penstroke.
It might be an evolution thing, like for example, the "g" in Mark McGwires' signature. Is there some timeline of his signature that you can refer to?
As I'm sure you are aware, most athletes signatures change dramatically in one respect or another over time.
Gary Sheffield in 1990 looks nothing like today. If I didn't have an early Sheffield, I would NEVER believe, based on todays' exhibits, that he actually signed the way he did as a rookie.
Reggie Sanders, and Randy Johnson are others that come immediately to mind.

Good point. Going by that theory I would sumise the auto is fake. I have a few early Emmitt autos and it is with the rounded letter like the second card I have pictured. The seller claims he got this card personally signed by Emmitt at a Cowboys-Lions game in '92. So with that knowledge this card should be with the rounded letter.

Here's one like yours that was psa/dna authenticated - the curvatures are similar to the one you own that was signed for the card company.

The other could be good for all I know - but it does deviate from what I've seen.

You could always go for the quick opinion thing with PSA.

    Good luck

most of it looks good, pen pressure, size, angle etc. But the "T" in Emmitt that you refer to, has no loop on top, it is pointed and the "S" in Smith doesn't round back up and towards the front again, the "Star" he made, to make the # sign looks different from the one I have signed in person from the same time frame, 1993 IIRC, and differs from the other one you have shown. If it's cheap, might be worth a shot...if not, I'd probably pass on it.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Mike, is that an Emmitt auto by itself or did other stars on the team sign it as well?

  • I have an Emmitt Smith signature I got in person circa 1991 and it also has a "pointed S" that looks more like a "J" similar to that one. My vote is that it is authentic.
  • Hey oddball,

I was curious what your signature means.

    Thanks!
