In November 2004, I started a mission to put the 1966 Topps baseball set together in PSA 9 or better. With the receipt of three cards for CardMrchnt in San Diego today, now 14 months into the mission I am a half way there and resting comfortably at lucky #13 in the registry for that set.
If I told any of my family or friends there first response would be "who cares?", followed by "how much has that cost you?" So I am sharing my success with a bunch of strangers in cyber space who share my passion. Thanks for reading.
As we know finding some of these cards in Mint or better is challenging. This year picking up new cards will be more difficult, so by the end of 2006 my goal is 75% of the set.

edit to add: 1966 hi numbers are IMO the tuffest of all the series with the possible exception of the 57 4th series. Good luck!
Spacktrack, you are definitely correct. There are some cards that still have not made it to a PSA 9 yet. The first 50% will be easier than the last 50%. It will be a four to five year project with a lot of tough competition out there. While this set does not have the big name rookies of 1967 or 1968 (Palmer, Jenkins and Sutton are the key rookies of 1966) it does have Willie Mays as card #1 being on top of a lot of piles with the rubber band around them.
The thing I like in those old years was the superstars had cards ending in 50 or 00. In 1966 Mantle 50-Koufax 100-Colavito (a decent career) 150-Matthews 200-Clemente 300-Stottlemye (See Colavito) 350-Zolio Veralles (MVP the prior year) 400-Oliva (see Colavito and Stottlemyre) 450-Aaron 500-McCovey 550. The only mistake in that pattern was card 250 Sammy Ellis.
Two other odd things about that set is that they have 19 team cards in it, but no Astros Team, nor are there World Series Highlight cards from the prior season.
the 65 set has the same problem. i wonder why the houston club is not pictured as a team in those years? and quite possibly other years?

In fact, I was toying with the idea of starting a 1966 set myself - how tough do you think it would be to do a set let's say in all 8, or 8 with a few 9s? I don't really follow the 1966 market that closely, so I need some info from the experts before I decide what to do.
Thanks!
I think an 8, mixed in with some 9's is very do-able. There are currently about 50 9's that can be had for under $50, some go for in the $20's and $30's. On the other hand 1/1 9's normally go in the $600 range. There is a mixed group in the registry, but there are enough of us who are willing to help new comers to get you going.
Good Luck
That's quite a challenge - not to mention the cost!!! I have never looked - has anyone completed the set in 9 or better? And what would be the "real" estimated budget for something like this?
I agree with Steve, the hi numbers will be a real challenge and very expensive.
I wish you all the luck - heck it took me 2 yrs to buy half the 63F BB set in 8!!!
I don't think I have the persistence or attention span!

Not all cards are available in PSA 9, although almost are. No one has gotten all 9's or better yet. As I have mentioned before it is a very competitive set on E-Bay, with a lot of collectors keeping their cards private on the registry. I don't know how the other mid 60's are but 1/1's routinely go for $550+ 1/2's $450+. Check how items 2119 and 2121 went in Mastronet's auction last month as well as some of the PSA 10's. Mastronet December 2005 Auction. Most if not all of that was the number 3 registry getting picked apart. My quick math totaled nearly $84,000 for the collection.
It is safe to say there are personality clashes amongst the buyers.
