About the rec.collecting.coins newsgroup

Many regulars here have been longtime regulars of the Internet newsgroup rec.collecting.coins.
Contributions by many of the veteran posters have been absent or greatly reduced since the
lawsuit by the "certain Florida grading company."
That vacuum may account for some of the present unhappy situation. Recently the group has a become a pig sty that makes the CU open forum look like Sunday school.
For some time posts made exclusively to rec.collecting.coins and alt.marketing.online.ebay have
been replied to and crossposted to the other group by a spoofed ID of someone in the originating
group, causing a hundred replies "stop crossposting!" "I did not crosspost this" "Yes you did,
learn to trim your f**king headers." "Idiot coin dealers!" "Idiot ebayers!"
I wonder if many of these people are even who they claim to be. Would a classical guitar
performer brag that he insults Christians at his concerts and expect to give many? Would a
legitimate coin collector spend hundreds of hours trying to argue that owning a contemporary
counterfeit Capped Bust half dollar is a felony? Or that COPPER is one of the "noble metals?"
Would a "soccer mom" on ebay with kids to raise really engage in crossposting a lot of crap into
rec.collecting.coins accusing people she doesn't know of being child molesters, spammers and
crooks?
I personally have had my identity spoofed with messages apparently from me seeming to personally
attack longtime colleagues...or seeming to participate in "flames" in a manner that makes me seem
to be an idiot to the point that I receive emails from friends telling me so! Of course once I have been "killfiled" by angry members, any posts that are actually made by me explaining what has happened become invisible to them. A perfect setup for mischief.
Does an old-timer who restores antique radios really make fun of people his own age who have
died and talk like someone from the "Opie and Anthony" show? (They are the radio "comedy" team who had to move to satellite radio after broadcasting a live account of a couple allegedly having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York)
Are there really "women" who call other women "c*nts" and claim to have multiple internet
accounts so "you will never stop me?" Seems like some internet "cross-dressing" to me.
Do people really make OPEN POSTS saying "here is my name, home address and phone number...let's get together...I'll have my new shotgun ready."
Do professional business people really make actionable libelous statements under their own names,
knowing that Google archives the original message (or replies) forever?
Of course, the answer is "no," but that assumes the people are sane. Or are they sane? Or are
they even those people? Or are just the impersonatators insane? Or just me? Or just everyone
else? Or is to make me think that way their goal?
I have certainly talked to colleagues about "out of character" newsgroup posts who deny making
the post. Was the original post real or is a longtime friend a liar? Is there some "disgruntled
customer" out there trying to make trouble for me, or is it a "friendly" competitor trying to
ruin my reputation?
Or are these strangers who simply get their kicks out of destroying not only a discussion forum,
but personal and professional relationships by making everyone hate each other?

Newsgroups are stupid.
Usenet predated the internet, as we know it today, by a quite a number of years. In its time, was a great way to for groups to communicate on various topics. I recall reading and posting to Usenet in the early 80s from a university Unix machine. I even had UUCP emulating software on my Commdore 64. However, nowadays, it is redundant and has outlived its usefulness. Unless RCC becomes a moderated group (and who wants to volunteer to become a moderator?) it will continue to die.
Forums like this are much more useful in that they are (generally) well-behaved, and for coins, include the benefit of being able to embed images.
I remember some thread arguing about how many times the UHRs were struck which got way out of hand, more than I have ever seen on this chat board. That was enough for me.

<< <i>RCC is kind of a mess now, isn't it
Newsgroups are stupid. >>
It really isn't that bad at all. The trolls have left for the time being
and they are easy to deal with if you ignore them or put them in
a killfile anyway. I'm a 10+ year vet of rec.collecting.coins and have seen a lot of things happen there over the years.
Like all unmonitored newsgroups there is an element of the untamed wild west "anything goes" atmosphere to it. Some people
can deal with that and some can't. There are heated discussions
over certain aspects of coin collecting followed by periods of calm
and tranquility.
ISPs are not even bothering offering the service anymore it is
that old and annoying.
most just want porn and binaries. the rest, well they constantly
fight the signal to noise ratio.
some say AOL and universities allowing freshman ruined it long ago.
<< <i>newsgroups, in my opinion are dead.
Not at all. They are alive.

Some have dropped newsgroups but many still offer them. It may be
old but for discussion in general it is not any more annoying than
most other formats.

fight the signal to noise ratio.
A truely silly stereotype. If you want porn it is much easier to
find and access on the web than in a newsgroup format. Signal to
noise will always be there, even in this forum.

Not ruined at all. Perhaps more signal to noise but that is to be
expected when the internet moved well beyond just the academic
circles long ago.
i am glad you have found a few nice places among all the rest.
another great example would be IRC (internet relay chat) which
to this day has some nice places, but is it really worth it when
you consider if a person does not like your opinion, he can ask
a friend with a botnet to do a denial of service attack on your ISP,
your ISP's ISP, and even make MCI/LEVEL3 take notice.
from frankcoin's original post, I am getting the sense he is
encountering hijinxs of this caliber way too often.
that anything we posted on Netnews could be read by the military, other
universities, and research companies like TI, Boeing, GE, Merck, Westinghouse.
And after graduation, someone we had offended with an off topic or vulgar
post would REMEMBER WHO WE WERE and refuse to hire us...
