Easy money

So as it turns out this brand new seller to eBay has the rarest baseball card in the world and all I have to do is give them $25k for it. How can I lose?

LOL too funny...and instead of getting a color copy of the card, he uses a photocopy! SOLD!!
  • The Mantle and Robinson that they are also selling (graded no less) makes this all the more attractive.
It is unfortunate that they are so "POOR" that they have no availability to a PayPal account, but they do offer FREE SHIPPING.
    It is truly amazing.
The 1953 BOWMAN MANTLE they are selling is PRICELESS!!!!!
I wonder if Wal-Mart will sell me a $30,000 Money Order for $.46?
  • doesn't even look like they can steal the right scans. is it just me or does that scan of a "1953 bowman mantle graded a psa 8" actually depict a gem mt 10? amazing that ebay can't figure out this scam and that they are going to get burned for the listing fees...
  • You would think that if they were going to try to scam they might at least get a couple of feedback first and do a little homework like picking a card that was a little more realistic. They could easily find a color copy of this card anywhere on the web since its probably the most photographed card in existance.

But overall, I really can't see the risk here since they are giving a 7 day money back guarantee.
  • i don't have the cash right now so i just offered them a trade. i've got two hope diamonds and the title to some little bridge out in san francisco. i hear the diamonds are pretty rare and the bridge brings some decent cash flow. i hope he takes it.

the Wagner front scan has much better corners than the back scan!

I wonder if they would just sell the front of the card to me?

    Loves me some shiny!

It's hard to believe there are people in the world this dumb, What is even harder to believe is that someone will be dumb enough to actually bid on it.

  • This listing (#8748075034) has been removed or is no longer available

  • its an interesting approach- make your auction look so bad that people start thinking there is no way a scammer could be that dumb and therefore must be legit.

Here is the response to my trade offer they sent me just before they went NARU- do you think they'll still sell if to me now?

Response from mother060 : Item- t206 honus wagner baseball card (8748075034)

This message was sent while the listing was active.
    mother060 is the seller.

i sorry i dont need a bridge in alabama, but cash or cashiers check will work just fine for at least $15,000.
  • BULLPEN

What bridge do you own in Alabama?
I thought I had a monopoly in that area!

I have figured out who the seller is !>>>>>>>>>>>>>>image

  • I offered to trade him my ownership in this little bridge out in san fran- has good cash flow with all the tolls and such, but he lives in alabama and decided $15k for the most expensive sports card in the world was a better deal for him. I will forever kick myself as this is the one that got away.

Darn Bull, by the time I got to this thread the card is gone!

But, then again, another will be on the way!

When I read the thread, it reminded of the movie with Rodney Dangerfield - "Easy Money"

I'm a Rodney fan - and this one is classic. "Can I call you dad?"

I saw Rodney live at MGM in Vegas about 10 years ago. He was still funny (and dirty) as heck!
  • Stone, you just missed some POS trying to scam an unsuspecting person, only no unsuspecting person would buy a Wagner T206. Its not like its some low-end Rolex... they should learn a thing about cards before they start grifting them.

There is a lot of scumminess hitting eBay right now, especially with the T206's at levels I've never seen before. There was a Cobb PSA 8 listed yesterday for a 99 cents open bid on a 3 day auction, no reserve from an eBay user who had previously been dormant for 6 months. The picture and psa cert was the exact same card that sold at a MastoNet auction Dec 7th for almost $22k. I bid on it just to see what was going on with it- didn't think anyone could possibly think they were going to flip a card like that on eBay and make a profit that fast, but who knows possibly someone got in over their head at Mastos and needed/wanted out. They accepted paypal credit cards so i figured if i won it cheap i'd buy the paypal insurance and cover myself if something went wrong.

Tonight eBay pulled the auction claiming someones account had been hijacked and the sale was a fraud. Someone obviously lifted the image from MastoNet and I guess they transfer the cash once paid out of the country figuring the inactive eBay/Paypal user wouldnt figure out until it was too late.

I suppose its good for the auction houses because at least with them you know its real and who to sue if its not. On eBay its just a steal cage death match these days on high end cards.

    Bull

In the course of a year, I would guess that people will bring up a few hundred items like that one - and ya gotta guess that it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I can personally say that this forum has saved people loads of money by exposing some of these dirtbags.

I can tell another story from another forum - a guy had his cards stolen out of his house.

He reported it to the police. Some were PSA graded. He spotted them recently on ebay. He contacted the police, in the same state he lives in, they went to the guys house and confiscated the goods.

So there's an example of where ebay, as such, helped a guy out!

Right now the goods are evidence pending an investigation and hopefully a trial.

    Ya gotta love this hobby!

  • i know any place there is money being spent there will be scumbags fast on the scene anyway possible, and i don't fault eBay as I think they have really stepped up there game on booting these guys. it's too bad they can't find a better way to keep them from constantly coming back for more though.

i've actually seen some things at shows that blow away the eBay fraud. i was at the Naxcom hollywood park show last year and i went to buy a psa 9 from a guy, nothing special about the card- $60 card. He said he wanted to bag it for me so it wouldn't get scratched and then switched the card. The one he put in my bag had a PSA 9 cert but the case had been opened and resealed, probably with a 7 or 8 in it. I could see the smokiness around the edges that occurs when you crack those things. Luckily I opened the bag to look at it as I walked away and realized what he did- and he saw me turn around immediately. He was so apologetic- "Oh, I gave you the wrong bag, that one goes back to PSA to get resealed". The guy at the table next to him rolled his eyes at the whole ordeal. Apparently everyone around him knew the scam.

    Nice guy Bull.

Did you consider reporting him to the promoters of the show?

  • At that same show two dealers went to blows because one knocked over another guys display (it was actually the display guy's fault) and another dealer screamed at and told a customer to go f himself simply because he landed a really strong 1/1 auto pull and then then immediately sold it to another dealer for a grand. Naxcom is a tough, tough environment, like dealing in the jewelry district in downtown L.A.

If it had been a TriStar show, I would have immediately reported him as they run a class show and I know they really care about fraud. Naxcom, sadly I think that stuff is pretty prevalent so what's the point.

Hey, that's good news. I remember that thread over at VBC, but I don't read or post there much there so I missed the response. Wonder who stole the cards? Was it his children's teenage friends as some thought it might be?
