  • I have used a box cutter - just kinda butchered it.

When it's warm here and my woodworking shop is up and running, I've also used a bandsaw! imageimageimage

I have actually put a GAI holder in a vice and sawed the top right off with a very sharp blade. No damage to the card whatsoever.

Dremel each corner, the pry apart.
Failing that, use diagonal cutters on each corner, being careful of flying shards of plastic.

Just twist it back and forth. That will crack the seals, and you can pry it apart from there. You might need to pry with a screwdriver, but I've gotten a few apart with just my fingers.

easiest of all holders to get into without damaging the holder, much less the card, that . . .in my opinion is why they are worthless for the most part.image
  • I have found BVG holders, which are much like the GAI holders (like a shoebox), to be the easiest to crack. Lay card down, take screwdriver at top near flip and give it a tap with a hammer. A chunk will break off. Then, twist and pry the edge with plyers which will break the seals.

I agree bgs are the easiest. I cracked appr. 15 recently and the easiest way is to take a screwdriver and apply pressure straight down on the seal. You will know the seal is broke when it turns white. Just keep going around the slab breaking the seal. Then pry up the top with a screwdriver and you are in. I dont like the hammer approach on the screwdriver because too many thing could go wrong.

These guys have figured out how to crack Beckett's tombs.

    Maybe the same approach?
  • Wow, that is unreal! No, the way I have done it is tap the screwdriver blade on the edge where the seam is. I'm not sure that I would have the cahones to use the method shown in your link there. Sounds like it works well though. Good job finding that one!

edited to add: Anyone have the cahones to try that method on a GAI holder?

Actually it has more to do with stupidity then having cahones! Too much risk. The card could possibly be damaged. Sharp plastic shards could end up sticking the soft plastic bag. These holders are so easy to crack with just some pressure on the seams with a screwdriver. But these fools in the link break out the sledge. Yeah, lets try that on a nice Mantle card...dont think so

that is what i do. I use a hack saw. i then can use a screw driver or exacto and pry apart.

I use a chisel and a hammer to crack the top edge, then insert the edge of the chisel or screwdriver to pry the top edge which tends to free up the edges and I've never hurt a card doing this. Not sure about that quick whack-with-best-wishes pic that one guy was showing on the BGS holder. Holy crap!

For PSA cards, I tip the holder on it's side, tap the break in the seam on the top edge near the label with a chisel and hammer and she pops right open. Everyone has their own method, as long as you get the card out without hurting it, you're in good shape.
